“Just as TiVo enthusiasts are getting used to having the ability to record all their favorite programs, HD has come along and changed things. A standard TiVo set can’t record HD content; you’ll have to shell out at least $500 for an HD-recording unit. Additionally, not everyone has TiVo, and many that do don’t get their local channels (where a lot of HD content is to be found) except through an antenna.

Amazingly enough, this has caused a renewed interest in VCRsâ€”but VCRs that can record HD content. These HD-VCRs are great, but the tapes are expensive, and they make keeping a lot of HD contentâ€”such as an entire season of Stargate SG-1 or Aliasâ€”difficult, if not impossible. But a little bit of work and a lot of clever experimentation can get you around this limitation, keep you in HD content, and impress your buddies. “

The best 4K TVs under $500: premium picture on a budget

If you’re buying a new TV, there’s a very good chance it’s going to be a 4K model, especially if you’re looking at a 50-inch set or larger. The Ultra HD standard has been the norm for several years now, but that big bump in pixel count doesn’t always translate to higher prices. While most bigger TVs can cost well over $1,000, you can score an awesome 4K model for less than $500.

It’s true. And we’re not talking about TV brands that the world has never heard of before. Companies like Hisense, TCL, and even Samsung and Sony produce some terrific 4K models for $500 or less. These may not be flagship-level QLEDs or OLEDs, but if the most important part of your new TV purchase is improved resolution and 4K upscaling, the TVs below are near-perfect.

When setting up a new TV or soundbar, you'll need to get your hands on a variety of different cables. Most folks will simply use whatever old HDMI cable is sitting around their home, as most TVs are compatible with the hardware. But if you're setting up a decent sound system with your TV, you'll probably read something about HDMI ARC and eARC ports in the owner's manual.

But what exactly is the difference between these two types of ports? And is one better than the other? More importantly, are they better than your standard HDMI ports?
