Akimbo Adds Hallmark, Outdoor Channels

Akimbo’s Internet-based video-on-demand service will be adding content from both Crown Media’s Hallmark Channel library as well as the Outdoor Channel.

Under the deal, family-friendly movies from Crown Media’s basic-cable Hallmark Channel will be available to Akimbo subscribers, including titles like Alice in Wonderland and The 10th Kingdom. Akimbo CEO Joshua Goldman said “Long-time fans and first-time viewers alike will be thrilled with the high-quality, family friendly movies available from Hallmark Channel’s library.”

Akimbo subscribers will be able to choose from a selection of Outdoor Channel programming like Angler on Tour,Circle of Honor, and 4×4 TV as part of Akimbo’s “Free For All” basic offering. “With the Outdoor Channel on Akimbo, armchair nature lovers and ardent outdoor enthusiasts can now select their favorite shows about fishing and other wilderness pursuits from the Outdoor Channel to watch whenever they want,” said Goldman.

Akimbo delivers movies and television programming to subscribers on demand via a broadband Internet connection; programming is stored in a set-top Akimbo player connected to a subscriber’s TV. A subscription to the Akimbo service costs $9.99 per month.

Roku announced it is expanding its free/linear lineup on The Roku Channel to more than 100 available channels in the United States. To help navigate through the new sea of content, the company also introduced a new Live TV Channel Guide aimed at making browsing through the substantial catalog ad as simple as possible.

The new channels launched Tuesday, June 2 while the Live TV Channel Guide -- which essentially looks and functions similar to cable TV guides that many Comcast and Dish customers may have grown accustomed to -- is expected to roll out in the U.S. over the coming weeks. The Roku Channel is available on all Roku streaming devices and TVs with built-in Roku, as well as Samsung TVs and the Roku mobile app.
