The new Maserati Quattroporte is a very handsome car indeed. But it has to be, really, as it is based upon the current Chrysler 300, which is based upon the old Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Essentially, the Quattroporte is an Italian luxury sedan based upon a German chassis designed in around 1990. Visual pop, then, is crucial.
Keeping that in mind, Maserati has teamed with clothing brand Ermenegildo Zegna to create a concept car. Maserati, for some reason, calls this concept “Limited Edition.” No kidding.
To play up the exclusivity of both brands, the Limited Edition Quattroporte has been painted in a platinum paint that we think looks bronze. Maserati brags the paint, “simulates the fluidity and purity of metal, by using ultra-fine aluminum pigments.” Starting with a gloss black primer creates that effect, the undercoat amplifies the aluminum pigments, which gives the sensation of depth. We can’t tell from the photos, so we’ll just take their word for it.
Taking the dedication to dancing the line between classical and the contemporary shared by both brands, the interior has been draped with soft leather and a velvet smooth fabric.
While the Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition is attractive, we can’t help but feel it was simply a way of churning out a quick concept car for the Frankfurt Auto Show when Maserati had nothing else to unveil.
Chrysler, Maserati’s cousin, does the same thing once in a while. It whips out limited edition models from designers that A.) No one has ever heard of – or – B.) No one cares about. Now Maserati is doing it, too!
