We’ve now got our first extended look at X-Men: Days of Future Past with the debut of the first proper trailer for the movie, which hits theaters on May 23, 2014. It’s been a long and occasionally bumpy road for the Marvel Comics series under Fox’s purview, with two strong efforts from director Bryan Singer in X-Men and X2, followed by the embarrassment that was Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand. If you’ve forgotten about that one, it’s only because the foul taste of X-Men Origins: Wolverine washed it away.
Shudder.
Hugh Jackman’s image as Wolverine was rehabbed earlier in 2013 with director James Mangold’s Wolverine, just as Matthew Vaughn resuscitated X-Men movies in 2012 with X-Men: First Class. Now all of these worlds are set to collide once more when Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, the First Class crowd, and Singer’s original vision come together in X-Men: Days of Future Past. This debut trailer (below) gives a sense of what to expect from the story and tone without giving up too much in terms of “the goods.” No Sentinels and only brief flashes of set piece possibilities.
What we get instead is a whole lot of talking over dramatic music and a seemingly unending lineup of characters, familiar and unfamiliar. We see Professor X and Magneto the most, both in their Patrick Stewart/Ian McKellen guise and their younger James McAvoy/Michael Fassbender guises. There’s some Wolverine, a wee bit of Ellen Page-as-Kitty Pryde, and more. Give it a look. Tell us what you think.
