Sony is upping the PlayStation brand’s multimedia game with the addition of a Qello app to the PlayStation 3, while PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita apps will follow at a later date (via Sony’s PS Blog). Qello (pronounced “kwello”) is a video content-streaming service in the vein of Netflix, only its focus is entirely on live concerts and music documentaries. The company has deals in place with all major labels, along with “a host of other content providers,” and it uses this access to deliver content spanning all genres of music from the 1920s all the way through to today.
Qello is a subscription-based service with a $4.99 monthly cost for an “All-Access Pass” that grants you unlimited access to the company’s catalog. Yearly subscriptions are also available for a 25-percent discount. All PlayStation users get 15 days of free All-Access Pass time after signing up. Qello is also partnered with Sony on a promotion that awards one randomly chosen user per week with a free PS Vita, over a period of four weeks. Each time you sign in to Qello, you’ll be entered to win.
There’s no specific word on when the PS4 or PS Vita versions will be released. The PS Blog post ends with a note that users can expect a PS Vita-related Qello app announcement “in the coming weeks,” but there’s no mention of the PS4 at all beyond confirmation that Qello is eventually coming to the recently released console.
