After Disney and Lucasfilms decided to move Star Wars Episode VII to December 18, 2015 to give J.J. Abrams and company more time, Universal has wisely decided to change the release date of its film Warcraft, which was planned for release on the same day. Warcraft, based on the World of Warcraft franchise, will now release on March 11, 2016, according to Variety.

Despite the delay, the film seems to be moving ahead on schedule. The first concept art was released during November’s BlizzCon, and Travis Fimmel (Vikings, The Beast) was recently cast in an unspecified lead role. More casting news should be coming in the next month or two. The characters of Durotan and Lothar from the game will both appear, and Jones has said he would like to feature at least one strong female lead, if not more.

Directed by Duncan Jones, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Charles Leavitt, the film depicts the first meetings between humans and orcs and will feature locations from the game. Both the humans and the orcs will be depicted equally, with neither side being “good” or “bad.”

The delay shouldn’t affect the filming, which is set to begin in January of 2014.

Updated: With the sudden death of Paul Walker, Universal may once again alter its timetable to accommodate filming on future Fast and Furious films. Fast & Furious 7 is currently scheduled for release on July 11, 2014 (although that may change), and more films in the series have already been announced, including one tentatively set for 2016.  If that changes, other films may be reshuffled to fill the gap.

Disney confirms, then retracts Star Wars Outlaws release window
Kay Vass joined by her small alien companion called Nix in a futuristic city.

The first couple months of 2024 are jam-packed with games like Tekken 8, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Princess Peach Showtime, but the fall calendar is currently much more of a mystery. An article from Disney today claimed that Star Wars Outlaws would be one of the fall's most notable AAA releases, but Ubisoft has since corrected that error and is keeping the highly anticipated game's release window at a vague "2024" for now.

Developed by Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora studio Massive Entertainment, Star Wars Outlaws looks like it will be an ambitious open-world game that will follow young smuggler named Kay Vess and her struggles during the time period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It looks like the closest thing we'll ever get to a Star Wars version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Star Wars Outlaws impressed with showings at June 2023's Xbox Games Showcase and Ubisoft Forward, and previously only had a vague 2024 release window."

Warcraft and Diablo devs reveal the focus of Phil Spencer’s Blizzard visit
Phil Spencer at BlizzCon 2023

Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October, and shortly thereafter, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer confirmed on the Official Xbox Podcast that he was going to visit Activision Blizzard studios in the coming weeks. Spencer did so prior to BlizzCon 2023, where he also ended up making an appearance during the Opening Ceremony to reaffirm Xbox's commitment to support all of Blizzard's major franchises. To get a better idea of what Spencer's studio visit and BlizzCon appearance felt like for Blizzard developers, we asked John Hight, Warcraft franchise general manager, and Rod Fergusson, Diablo general manager, about the experience.

"They actually came out a couple of weeks ago, Phil and a lot of his leadership team. What was nice about it was we had prepared all of these PowerPoints and stuff, but they just wanted to meet the teams," Hight told Digital Trends. "They had lunch out in our patio, the cafe. We had hundreds of employees and Phil made himself available just to talk to people. He just wanted to see some of the games and meet some of the people, so we gave him a demo of one of the areas in The War Within for a while, and then we had [game designer] Tom [Chilton] demo Warcraft Rumble. It was fun because we started to go through introductions and I said ‘Clearly you’re having fun playing the game, you can tune out and just play that.' They’ve been very supportive. I think they’re excited by the fact that, especially with Warcraft, we have a diversity of games and platforms that we’re building for.”
