At the Computex trade show in Taipei, Toshiba plans to unveil its SD-L912A HD DVD writer for notebook computers (Japanese), enabling notebook computer users to burn single-layer HD DVD media, as well as double-layer DVDs and standard CD media.
A single-layer HD DVD disc can store up to 20 GB of data, making the media a good option for backing up large amount of files and data, such as music, images, and (of course) video. Toshiba anticipates makers of notebook computers focused on the gaming, multimedia, and desktop-replacement markets will offer the SD-L912A with their systems.
The drive uses an ATIAPI interface, features 8 MB of cache, and meets the EU ROHS directive on use of hazardous substances. Toshiba expects to being sampling the drive to manufacturers in July, although no date for mass production has been released, nor has any pricing information.
