Wii Outsells PS3 In Japan Five-to-One

A little over a year ago, analysts and industry watchers would have bet that the battle for dominance in the so-called “next-generation” video game console arena would have been between Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3, with Sony in the dominant role and Microsoft doggedly playing catch-up—and virtually no one mentioning Nintendo. But the future isn’t what it used to be, and another sign has come by way of Japanese game magazine publisher Enterbrain, which reports the Nintendo Wii outsold Sony’s PlayStation 3 by a factor of five to one in Japan during the month of May.

According to Enterbrain, Sony managed to sell 45,321 PS3 units in Japan during May. Conversely, Nintendo moved 251,794 Wii consoles. The move continues the Wii’s winning streak in Japan: during April, Enterbrain found the less-expensive console with the innovative controller outsold the more-powerful PS3 by four to one.

Sony says it will ship 11 million PS3 units by the end of its fiscal year in March 2008; however, that target seems to be slipping further into the realm of wishful thinking. In the United States, market research firm NPD Group also puts the Wii significantly ahead of the PS3, consistently ranking it as the top-selling gaming console.

The PlayStation 3’s lagging sales darkens the shadow looming over Sony’s gaming division, which posted an operating loss just under $2 billion for its fiscal year ended March 31, 2007. The massive start-up costs associated with the Blu-ray equipped PS3 console dragged down Sony’s overall profitability.

3 realistic improvements we want to see with PS5 Pro games

As we reach the middle of this current console generation, people are wondering when improved “Pro” versions of consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will arrive. PS5 fans had their curiosity rewarded this week when Moore’s Law is Dead and Insider Gaming leaked the specs of what has become colloquially known as the PS5 Pro and is reportedly referred to as “Trinity” internally at Sony.

The leaked documents indicate that the PS5 Pro will have a similar CPU to the base model that can be modified to run at a slightly higher clock speed, as well as 67 teraflops of 16 bit floating-point calculations, a GPU with 60 AMD compute units and faster memory bandwidth, and more. These are improvements over the launch PS5 model, but it isn’t a console generation-like leap in terms of hardware power.

Mother 3 is finally on Nintendo Switch … but only in Japan

Mother 3, the highly requested cult-classic RPG for the Game Boy Advance, is set to appear today on the Nintendo Switch Online service. But there's a catch: It's only available in Japan.

North Americans were first introduced to the Mother series under the name Earthbound on the SNES in 1995. As was common at the time, the game was renamed for the West in an attempt to avoid confusion. In 2006, a third entry was released in Japan for the GBA simply called Mother 3, but it has never had an official translation for Western audiences. Both Mother 2, aka Earthbound, and the original Mother, renamed Earthbound Beginnings, have been added to Nintendo Switch Online, but there has never been any indication that the third game would receive the same treatment.

PS Plus is getting one of the best sci-fi RPGs ever this month

A companion in The Outer Worlds.

The February additions to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Essential were unveiled by Sony on Wednesday morning, and it's a great batch of games for RPG fans. Thirteen games will hit the service on February 20, many of which come from Bandai Namco Entertainment's Tales Off series. The most exciting addition for me is The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition, which is the complete version of a fantastic sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment.

The Outer Worlds first released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in October 2019, while Spacer's Choice Edition gave the RPG a next-gen upgrade in March 2023. It's a choice-driven sci-fi RPG that takes place in a dystopic spacefaring future where corporations reign supreme. The adventure takes players to colonies in the Halcyon system, where they intervene in various conflicts and make lots of choices that shape the narrative. It's less ambitious than a game like Starfield, but that gives The Outer Worlds a sense of focus that makes each decision feel more important. Add in some entertaining writing and a lot of leeway for player choices, and you have one of the best RPGs of the past several years.
