Fujitsu Offers 300 GB External Drive

Back in December 2006, Fujitsu announced it had pushed the capacity of 2.5-inch hard disks—the kind used in notebook computers and other mobile platforms—all the way up to 300 GB. Now, Fujitsu has bundled the drive into an external enclosure with security features aimed at mobile professionals, touting the unit as the world’s largest capacity, secure 2.5-inch portable external hard disk drive.

“Fujitsu has almost forty years of experience in the hard disk drive industry, and we have successfully expanded our 2.5-inch HDD business over the last fourteen years,” said Lorne Wilson, Fujitsu Computer Products of America’s senior VP of sales and marketing, in a statement. “As a result of our focus and commitment to R&D, we have been able to leverage our expertise in this field to create an ideal solution for portable backup and storage solutions.”

The drive includes an integrated USB 2.0 cable for easy connection to a notebook or desktop system, and the drive runs off USB power so there’s no need for a separate power adapter. Fujitsu i also bundling the drive with Apricom Inc.’s EZ Gig II for Windows, which enables complete system backups via disk cloning along with single-file compressed backups. The drive also offers Cipheriz’s Cryptainer software to encrypt drive contents using AES 256 or Blowfish 448 encryption, and Second Copy 2000 synchronizing software.

Fujitsu’s 300 GB external drive should be available in the third quarter of 2007 with a suggested price of $229; a 120 GB version will be priced at $129.99.

But for a growing number of users, they just aren’t quite mobile enough. Busy people frequently passing data between computers and devices -- like photographers or students with Chromebooks – may not have much patience for constantly juggling cables, SD cards, and computer connections.

Wireless external hard drives offer a different sort of solution. They allow you to pass files between devices wirelessly without the need for connections, and many include batteries, so you can take them on the road and store your files no matter where you are. Here are the best of the best.
