Apple Could Cause Flash Memory Price Hike

As if we needed further proof of Apple’s dominance in the market for portable media players, a report from analyst DRAMexchange shows that the California company is gobbling up 25 percent of the entire world’s flash memory supply in the making of its iPhone and iPod portable media players.

Combined with a problematic new flash manufacturing techniques that has pared back supply, DRAMexchange expects that Apple’s ravenous consumption of Flash memory may drive prices skyward in the third quarter. Prices have already risen four to seven percent in the last three months due to the new manufacturing process, which has companies attempting to make even thinner chips.

The result of both factors coming together in the third quarter may be a flash memory shortage. Besides driving up prices, a shortage could also keep smaller manufacturers from getting their hands on the memory they need. DRAMexchange expects a possible shortage would last two or three quarters while manufacturers works the kinks out of the new technologies and increase their yields.

Apple just upset everyone, claiming that the 8GB of Unified Memory available in the base MacBook Pro M3 is "probably analogous to 16GB on other systems."

The MacBook Pro M3 has already come under fire for only including 8GB of Unified Memory in its base configuration, which runs $1,600. MacWorld recently ran a story criticizing the 8GB of memory in the MacBook Pro M3, saying, "If 8GB will be a bottleneck for many today, imagine the performance of that non-upgradeable laptop in a few years’ time."

The information comes from the news site MacRumors, which cites “a verified source” in its report. According to the outlet, Apple is about to change the list of Macs available to be traded in at the company’s stores.

We're most likely just a couple of weeks away from the release date for the Intel Raptor Lake refresh, and while Intel itself hasn't said much about it, interesting tidbits of information leak out pretty frequently. Today, we got a good look at what might be the pricing of almost the entire lineup. And it looks like price increases are coming, however minor they may be.

We expected that a price hike was likely for the Raptor Lake refresh, and that's exactly what seems to be happening. As per a tip sent to VideoCardz, the majority of the 14th-Gen lineup appeared briefly at a Canadian retailer known as Canada Computers. While the CPUs weren't listed, they could be found by searching for the product names, and that gives an idea of what to expect. Keep in mind that these prices are in Canadian dollars.
