LaCie Takes Big Disk Extreme+ to 2 TB

Accessory and peripheral maker LaCie has taken the wraps off its Big Disk Extreme+ external hard drive, pushing the line’s capacity to 2 TB.

"LaCie is excited to introduce this high-capacity solution for professional users," said Olivier Mirloup, LaCie Hard Disk Drive Business Unit Manager, in a release. "The Big Disk Extreme+ is a triple threat with high-performance storage, high capacity and a user-friendly quick backup feature for data safety and recovery."

The new unit offers three interfaces—two FireWire 800 ports, one FireWire 400 port, and a USB 2.0 port—along with a LaCie Shortcut Button which can be used to launch any document or application with just a press: we recommend that it launch the bundled EMC Retrospect backup program for either Windows or Mac OS X. The drive offers a transparent RAID 0 array (we presume that means two 7,200 rpm 1 TB drives) along with 32 MB of cache; the drive also sport’s LaCie’s d2 design with a head-dissipating aluminum housing, a "smart" fan system, and a three-position switch for customized power management.

LaCie says the 2 TB drive is available today for $849, although the Web site says the company is only taking pre-orders, with units to ship in early August. The Big Disk Extreme+ units are also available in 1 and 1.5 TB capacities.

How much space does MacOS Monterey take up?
Quick Note in Apple's MacOS Monterey public beta

MacOS Monterey is the latest version of Apple’s operating system for its Mac and MacBook systems, and it comes with plenty of great features and reasons to upgrade. If you haven't upgraded to Monterey yet, it's important you know how much space MacOS Monterey takes up so that you can be sure you have enough storage to fit the big update.

The MacOS Monterey installer is 12.16GB. However, this isn't the whole picture, as it'll work out to a much larger install once unpacked. It’s imperative you have much more space than 12GB available on your Mac when upgrading, which is especially important for those running much earlier MacOS versions.
