Epic sued over Unreal Engine 3

Epic sued over Unreal Engine 3

While Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 made Gears of War a resounding graphical success,  other companies have apparently not had the same luck with Epic’s technology. Developer Silicon Knights, which licensed the engine for the Xbox 360 title Too Human, recently filed a lawsuit against Epic alleging that it hasn’t been living up to its end of the deal in licensing the engine.

According to Gamasutra, the suit claims, "Rather than provide support to Silicon Knights and Epic’s other many licensees of the Engine, Epic intentionally and wrongfully has used the fees from those licenses to launch its own game to widespread commercial success while simultaneously sabotaging efforts by Silicon Knights and others to develop their own video games."

The lawsuit goes on to say that Too Human’s critical failure at E3 and the success of Gears of War at the same conference are evidence that Epic hasn’t been playing fair.

Epic’s vice president, Mark Rein responded in a statement sent to major gaming news outlets. “We believe the claims against us are unfounded and without merit and we intend to fully defend against them… We’d love to tell you more about it but unfortunately our lawyers want us to save our comments for the courthouse so we’re going to do our best to comply with their wishes.”

Don’t miss this great sci-fi RPG while it’s free on the Epic Games Store
Parvati fights in The Outer Worlds.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition will be one of the next free games offered on the Epic Games Store, and that's a can't-miss freebie for fans of RPGs or sci-fi.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition is the complete version of a 2019 RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. Although it was much smaller in scale than some AAA RPGs like Starfield, that more limited scope allows The Outer Worlds to emphasize player choice in gameplay and narrative. This is one of those RPGs where you can kill pretty much any NPC walking around, even ones important to the ongoing story, and see how the results play out. The Outer Worlds has tons of replay value for that reason alone.

Epic Mickey: Rebrushed’s control tweaks reinvigorate a Wii classic
Key art for Epic Mickey Rebrushed.

While Nintendo’s February Direct Partner Showcase included a few unexpected games, nothing was more surprising than the return of Epic Mickey. The Nintendo Wii adventure is something of a cult classic among Disney fans thanks to its unique painting hook and some clever 2D levels that pay tribute to classic Mickey Mouse cartoons. Though it’s beloved by some, reviews at the time were mixed due to some clumsy Wii-era motion controls and a poor 3D camera.

Thankfully, the Disney adventure is getting some redemption in Epic Mickey: Rebrushed. The upcoming release doesn’t just bring the Wii game to Switch but aims to fix most of its most glaring problems, too. That’s a change I expected, considering that it would need a control overhaul to work with the Switch’s more traditional button layout. What surprised me, though, is that Rebrushed isn’t just a simple HD remaster like its title seemed to imply. It’s a true remake, even if its visual upgrades are a bit modest.
