Nokia 6555 Gets Smooth and Classy

Nokia 6555 Gets Smooth and Classy

Finland’s Nokia today announced its 6555 clamshell handset, featuring a sleek design with an analog clock on the outside and a recessed hinge that, when opened, offers a smooth-backed design which the company says offers an “ergonomic” user experience. Even better, the handset uses WCMDA and quad-band GSM technology, so although the company has currently only announced availability in Europe (€200, September) the 6555 is a strong candidate for the U.S. market.

“Mobile-savvy consumers expect superior quality and design,” said Markku Suomi, product group director for Nokia’s mobile phone group, in a statement. “We understood that need, and so created the the Nokia 6555. The Nokia 6555 is a sophisticated accessory delivering the outstanding features that you expect from Nokia.”

The 6555 sports a large internal 320 by 240 LCD display, a integrated video-capable camera of unspecified resolution (but with a 6× (digital?) zoom!), 30 MB of onboard memory (expandable via microSD storage), and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

Nokia plans to ship the 6555 in an all-black edition, along with two versions with red and gold accenting.

Google has announced a new partnership with RapidSOS that could end up saving your life. This important partnership will allow Android users to message 911 emergency call centers through Rich Communication Services (RCS). This new feature will begin rolling out later this winter.

As of today, you can communicate with 911 through SMS texting, but only in select locations. It’s only available to about 53% of U.S. emergency responder call centers, and since it’s SMS only, you have all of the usual limitations that come with it.
