Warhawk Multiplayer Combat Game Hits PS3

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that a new version of the venerable combat game Warhawk is now available exclusively for the PlayStation 3—and eager gamers can get the title either on Blu-ray disc or via download from the PlayStation Network.

Supporting up to 32 players online—and up to four on a single PS3 console—Warhawk is a remake of the original PlayStation game, and puts players in the middle of frantic vehicle- and infantry-based combat games like Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, and a new strategy-based “Zone Mode.” The game offers online leaderboards, stats, and rankings so players can select their opponents, and offers user-to-user online communications tools—for instance, the retail box edition ships with a piano black Jabra Bluetooth headset.

Warhawk’s furious action-combat gameplay and brilliantly detailed landscapes demonstrate PS3’s many capabilities,” said SCEA’s Jeff Reese, director of software marketing, in a statement. “Players will move seamlessly from the fierce aerial dogfights to the heated armed assaults and vehicular attacks on the ground. Warhawk is an exhilarating addition to the PS3 line-up this fall.”

Sony says Warhawk leverages the PS3’s processing power to offer an unparalleled level of details to the game’s visuals; in an interesting move, Sony also enables players to use their PS3 consoles as host servers for online Warhawk games, so player would have the option of joining games hosted by Sony or by players anywhere in the world.

Warhawk is prices at $39.99 for download via the PlayStation Network; the box retail version is priced at $59.99 and comes with that Jabra Bluetooth headset plus bonus video content. The ESRB has rated Warhawk T for “Teen.”

PlayStation State of Play returns this week, will feature 14 PS5 games
Three colorful PS5s float together in a line.

PlayStation will kick off the summer of digital video game reveal streams this week with a State of Play broadcast. The stream will take place at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 30.

State of Play is one of Sony's primary livestream presentation formats. It tends to be slightly shorter than the company's flagship stream, the PlayStation Showcase. This State of Play is a significant one, though, as Sony's slate of first-party games for 2024 is entirely unknown at this stage. This stream should shed some light on what's coming later this year.

PS Plus is is adding more games than usual to its game library in June. The service will get 14 games, with some rolling out on June 4. That list includes AEW Fight Forever, Tomb Raider: Legend, and five PlayStation VR2 games.

Sony's PS Plus subscription service has been hit-or-miss since its rebrand a few years back. Though its struggled to put out consistent content, especially retro games, its June lineup shows Sony making its biggest push yet to court subscribers. And its bringing some heavy hitters along to help with that.

May is packed with great games, but don’t miss these 3 hidden gems
Key art for Zet Zillions

While its biggest hitters have been Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, XDefiant, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, May has also seen indie games thrive. While some of these games, including Animal Well and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, have clearly gotten the respect they deserve, in the past week alone, three standout games flew under the radar among all the AAA releases.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a remake of one of the most influential video game RPGs ever made, and it just exited early access on Steam and launched for consoles on May 23. Zet Zillions is a quirky roguelike card game with an enthralling gameplay loop and character designs that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Finally, there’s Starstruck Vagabond, a chill sci-fi shipping game created by Second Wind’s Yahtzee Croshaw. These three games are all quite different from each other, but that also makes it more likely that one of the games will speak to your specific tastes.
