JVC has announced it is shipping what it claims is the world’s first single-sided, dual-layer rewritable DVD media, enabling users to store data using a dual-layer capable DVD burner—and delete and rewrite that data anytime they like. The new single-sided discs support up to 8.5 GB—1.8 times the capacity of single-sided DVD media—and JVC is touting the discs as environmentally friendly since users can simply rewrite the discs when/if their content becomes irrelevant, rather than throwing them away and starting over with new blank media.
The new media complies with the DVD-RW for DL ver 2.0 standard for 2× continuous rewriting, and the discs can be rewritten roughly 1,000 times with normal care taken in their storage and handling, The media also features JVC’s proprietary "hard coat" finish to resist scratches and enable easy cleaning of fingerprints and other dirt marks.
The media is being manufactured in Japan, and JVC hasn’t released any pricing or availability details.
