Ericsson and Lenovo Doing Mobile Broadband

Sweden’s Ericsson has inked a deal with Chinas’ Lenovo to supply HSPA mobile broadband modules for the company’s notebook computers. According to Ericsson, selected ThinkPad notebooks will include its mobile broadband modules laters this year.

"With mobile networks being upgraded globally to handle greater demand for Internet services and data connectivity, consumers are increasingly utilizing mobile phones and notebooks to access the high-capacity services that they have typically experienced only through a wired or WiFi connection," said Ericsson executive VP Kurt Jofs, in a statement. "Today, Ericsson is doing for broadband what the company did for telephony 20 years ago – making it mobile and available to everyone, everywhere."

Ericsson’s modues are based on HSPA technology, which can theoretically offer peak download rates of 14.4 Mbps, although upload rates are about 2 Mbps. HSPA is already deployed on about 160 commercial wireless networks around the world covering about a billion people; in the U.S., AT&T offers 2.6 Mbps HSDPA service, although Edge Wireless and T-Mobile have announced plans to deploy service.

Lenovo will be Ericsson’s first client for mobile broadband solutions. No information was released on pricing or specific product bundles.

The base 5GB of data per month plan is $15 per month, and the 15GB per month plan is $15 per month, or $45 for three months. That is an incredible deal. All Mint Mobile plans include unlimited talk and text, access to 5GB high-speed data, free calling to Mexico and Canada, free mobile hotspot access, and WiFi calling support. You can't beat that!

U.S. Mobile: Pre-pay $23 per line per month

It's not very often that a U.S. carrier wants to save you money. However, that's the case with the latest Verizon promotions.

Whether you're a new or longtime Verizon user, the company is now offering YouTube Premium as one of its myPlan perks. It costs $10 per month, which is a 30% savings compared to the normal $14 monthly rate. With YouTube Premium, you can watch millions of videos ad-free and gain access to YouTube Music Premium. The YouTube Premium offering goes live tomorrow, May 30. It's the latest of other perks Verizon has added with its myPlan overhaul from a little over a year ago.

T-Mobile is buying one of the largest carriers in the U.S.

If you were impacted by T-Mobile's latest price hike and were looking for an alternative carrier, we have some bad news — T-Mobile is buying US Cellular. For those unaware, U.S. Cellular is the fifth-largest carrier in the U.S. despite being a regional carrier based mostly in the Chicago area. Unlike mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) like Metro by T-Mobile or Visible, which piggyback on a parent carrier’s network, US Cellular has its own towers and stores.

The deal would see T-Mobile pay $4.4 billion to take over US Cellular’s wireless customers, stores, and 30% of its spectrum assets. It includes a combination of cash and T-Mobile assuming $2 billion of U.S. Cellular’s debt. US Cellular will keep control of 4,400 of its towers and 70% of its spectrum portfolio, but T-Mobile will extend its leases for 600 US Cellular towers and sign new long-term leases on 2,015 more towers. In a conference call about the deal, T-Mobile also committed to hiring a significant number of U.S. Cellular associates.
