If you’re wondering why there are so many rumors and leaks this weekend, it’s because Mobile World Congress starts on Monday, where we should see a huge number of new products and announcements. One of the latest sneak previews is particularly worth reporting because it comes from a reputable source and involves one of the most talked-about bits of tech: the Samsung Galaxy Gear.
Seasoned Twitter rumormonger @evleaks has posted a low-resolution snapshot of the next Galaxy Gear models, which should be officially shown off at some point during MWC. According to the tweet, these watches will be called the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 Neo.
That’s all the information we have for now, so you’ll have to fill in the blanks yourselves. Are those physical buttons at the base of the watch faces? Is that an authentic metallic finish on the Galaxy Gear 2 model to the left? Can we expect to see these devices running on Samsung’s own Tizen rather than Android? We’ll have to wait and see.
If we can assume anything from the “Neo” moniker for the smartwatch on the right, it will offer a less powerful device for a lower price — Samsung is expected to use the same naming strategy to differentiate models in its growing tablet line-up.
With so many devices now available on the market and persistent rumors that Google, Apple and Microsoft are all ready to join in the smartwatch fun, you’d be forgiven for losing track. Check out our comprehensive smartwatch guide for a full run-down of the models that you need to know about.
UPDATE: It’s another hectic day at the rumor mill. Since we first published this post, our tipster @evleaks has tweeted a better image and said that the smartwatches will not have the “Galaxy” branding, perhaps suggesting a break with Android.
