HP Adds Ultra High-End Workstations

HP used a joint keynote address with DreamWorks at this year’s National Association of Broadcasters exhibition in Las Vegas to announce the availability of two new high-end workstations. The special edition xw8600 and xw9400 were developed especially for professionals in the broadcast, film/video post-production, animation and graphic arts industries.

Although both models already existed in HP’s line-up, the new versions are akin to supercharged editions customized for the most demanding work. The xw9400, which previously came with a choice of different Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors, now also boasts Quad-Core Opteron 2300 processors as choices. The xw8600, which already came with a broad array of different Intel processor options, now picks up the option for dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon X5482 processors, which boast a 1,600MHz front-side-bus and 800MHz memory.

Both systems will be available immediately, but HP has not yet updated its only ordering pages with the new processor options. Prices will depend on configuration, but current xw9400 systems start at $2,578, and xw8600 systems start at $1,699.

There's a major change happening with Intel's processors. The latest 14th-gen chips, previously known as the Raptor Lake Refresh, are available for sale, and you can read our Intel Core i9-14900K and Core i5-14600K reviews to see how they perform. They mark the last time Intel will use its Core i-series branding, as well.

Intel has gone through branding adjustments over its decades of business, but it established the Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 brands in 2008 with the release of the Nehalem architecture. That's the branding the company has stuck with for 15 years, updating the range with a Core i9 badge to note the most powerful chips in 2018.

Alienware just invalidated its own high-end esports monitor

Alienware has a new batch of 27-inch monitors it's releasing, but one of them stands out from the rest: the AW2724HF. It's a 27-inch, 1080p display for $460, but it comes with a 360Hz refresh rate, which could make it one of the best gaming monitors on the market.

The big reason why is that Alienware released its AW2524H just a few months ago. That 1080p display with a 500Hz refresh rate costs almost twice as much as the AW2724HF. Although the difference between 360Hz and 500Hz sounds like a lot for competitive gaming, it's really not.
