Best Buy to Offer Apple iPhone 3G

Best Buy to Offer Apple iPhone 3G

Mega-retailer Best Buy has struck a deal to become the first independent retailer to offer Apple’s iPhone 3G. iPhones will go on sale at Best Buy on September 7; of course, they will also remain available through Apple and AT&T.

“The iPhone has changed the way people think about their mobile phones, and we are delighted to help more customers get their hands on this revolutionary product,” said Best Buy president and CEO Brian J. Dunn,in a statement. “Our Best Buy Mobile employees have the training and expertise to deliver the best experience possible for our customers—from the initial purchase through the life of their iPhones.”

iPhone 3G pricing at Best Buy will match prices from AT&T and Apple: $199 for the 8 GB model, $299 for the 16 GB edition. Customers will also be required to sign up for a two-year service agreement with AT&T.

Best Buy has also carried Apple’s Macintosh computers and iPod media players; industry watchers generally credit the retailer’s previous relationship with Apple with enabling Best Buy to be the first retailer to independently offer the iPhone.

Best Buy has recently completed a two-year conversion of almost 1,000 Best Buy locations to include mobile phone products under the Best Buy Mobile, a joint venture with CarPhone Warehouse (Europe’s leading mobile phone retailer), which resells phone service under carrier’s brands. Best Buy estimates Best Buy Mobile currently accounts for about 3.6 percent of the U.S. mobile market, up from 2 percent last year.

5 phones you should buy instead of the Google Pixel 8a
The Google Pixel 8a's screen.

Everyone loves a bargain, and it's hard to argue that the Google Pixel 8a is anything but. With a flagship processor and one of the best phone cameras around, the $499 smartphone has the specs to make it a steal. But Google hasn't just crammed great hardware into the phone, as it also has one of the cleanest implementations of Android 14, all of Google's current AI roster, and an incredible seven years of software updates to boot. It's a cheap phone that can go the distance, and one we are more than happy to recommend.

But it's not perfect. The battery is a little weak, as is its charging ability — and the less said about the cheap-feeling plastic body, the better. So even though it's a strong phone, there are a number of alternatives that could pull your eyes away from Google's latest midrange phone.

iOS 18 has a hidden feature you’ll only see when your iPhone battery dies

It's been just a few days since Apple released the first developer preview of iOS 18. Since then, developers and everyday users have discovered features in the first iOS 18 beta that Apple didn't mention in its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) keynote. The most recent discovery concerns what happens when your iPhone's battery becomes exhausted.

Apple iPhones have a power reserve feature that conserves a small amount of battery life to support essential functions like Find My and NFC unlocking when the battery is nearly depleted. In iOS 18, the feature appears to be extended.

iOS 18 makes an 11-year-old iPhone feature exciting again

Following the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) keynote, developers are starting to dig into the first iOS 18 developer beta. Though this beta lacks Apple Intelligence and many of the other features demoed on Monday, it offers a surprising new take on an old iOS feature: the flashlight.

The built-in flashlight feature has been available on the iPhone since iOS 7, which was released in 2013. It hasn't changed much at all since then, which makes sense, given its basic function. Interestingly, it has received a significant update in iOS 18.
