Is Subaru bringing back the WRX hatchback?

The 2015 Subaru WRX is, “For the money … perhaps the best handling, most fun car on the market of any segment.”

So why on earth, would Subaru change up its excellent platform? Rumor has it that Subaru might build a WRX hatchback.

According to the Australian website, Motoring, Subaru is considering the idea. Honestly, that thought is as farfetched as the flight to kangaroo land.

Subaru’s WRX Project General Manager, Masuo Takatsu, stated that “We have received strong interest from the US, where the hatchback was 50 per cent (of previous-generation WRX sales), so we’re now considering.”

Yes, Subaru may be “considering” the idea, but realistically there is no solid reason as to why Subaru will produce a hatchback. Limited engineering resources are at the heart of the problem, and Suby already offers some excellent wagons: the Crosstrek and Outback.

Don’t get us wrong, reviving something like the WRX Wagon is a welcome thought, just not entirely feasible.

Waymo to bring self-driving minivans back to Bay Area for delivering packages
Waymo One

Waymo's self-driving minivans will return to San Francisco Bay Area streets, three months after the company stopped public testing of its autonomous vehicles due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Waymo plans to relaunch its fleet of self-driving minivans into Bay Area streets on June 8, according to an email acquired by The Verge. The vehicles, however, will not be transporting passengers. They will focus on delivering packages for non-profit organizations #DrawTogether, which gives art kits to children, and Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Electric SUV co-developed by Subaru, Toyota may not appear until 2025

Subaru and Toyota have entered into an agreement to co-develop electric cars, but the first product of that partnership may not appear for several years. Subaru unveiled a mockup of an electric SUV at a technology briefing in Japan, but wouldn't offer a more specific launch date than "before 2025," according to Automotive News Europe. What's more, Subaru's CEO said the United States will not be a priority for electric models.

The mockup had a tall SUV body, with a low roofline and steeply raked rear window, according to Automotive News Europe, giving it a sleeker look than more traditional models like the current Subaru Forester. Black plastic cladding over the wheel arches, similar to the Subaru Crosstrek, is meant to give the vehicle a more rugged appearance. The mockup also had cameras in place of exterior mirrors, according to Automotive News Europe. Some production models, including the Lexus ES and Audi E-Tron, have camera mirrors in certain markets, but the technology is not currently legal in the U.S.
