Blizzard Entertainment has officially launched World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion pack for its popular World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). And if you couldn’t get ahold of your nearest and dearest WoW-playing friends last night, it’s probably because they were in line waiting for the first copies to go on sale at midnight local time…then rushing home to install the software, download required updated, and dive into WoW’s latest and greatest.
“Wrath of the Lich King contains some of the best content we’ve created for World of Warcraft,” said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, in a statement. “We appreciate the valuable feedback from our beta testers and the continued enthusiasm and dedication of players around the world, and we look forward to seeing them in Northrend.”
The new expansion pack introduces the frozen continent of Northrend, where the Lich King Arthas Menethil is moving forward with a plan to end all life in Azeroth, the World of Warcraft fantasy world. Players can engage Arthas’ armies of undead warriors, explore new regions and dungeons, and figure out the mysteries of Northrend as they play—of course, they can also acquire new abilities, items, and skills, and now even engage in player-versus-player battle with seige vehicles and destructible buildings. The game expansion also introduces its first Hero class, the Death Knight.
Wrath of the Lich King is available for Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X at a suggested price of $39.99, with a collector’s edition going for $69.99. The soundtrack is also available on Apple’s iTunes service.
