EA To Expand Boom Blox Franchise

Electronic Arts has announced its going to expand the Boom Blox franchise it created in collaboration with film director and producer Steven Spielberg: coming in “spring 2009” to Europe and North America, Boom Blox Bash Party will add more than 400 new levels and more intense multi-player action to the destructive, puzzle-solving animated action game.

Boom Blox Bash Party is a wild social gaming experience,” said Steven Spielberg, in a statement. “We know families and friends really enjoyed playing the original Boom Blox together, so we designed more explosive multiplayer experiences with Boom Blox Bash Party.”

Bash Party will feature new block types (including a conveyor box and a “virus,”) along with new block shaps and tools that create new kinds of mayhem. Players will also be able to use cannons, paint balls, and slingshot tools, as well as throw and grab blocks. Players will also be able to download new levels via the Internet, as well as rate levels created by EA and the Boom Blox user community. A Create mode will enable players to make their own levels to share with friends or submit for worldwide distribution—and the Create mode will feature all the tools EA uses to make their levels.

Boom Blox Bash Party will be available for the Nintendo Wii; the game has not yet been rated.

EA’s deal with Spielberg—announced way back in 2005—also has the director collaborating on two other game titles: one is a realistic, story-based action game with a female protagonist codenamed “LMNO.” EA hasn’t released any information on the additional Spielberg titles since 2007, although EA has denied rumors that either of the games have been cancelled.

Warcraft developers lay out a grand vision for the franchise’s future
A still from World of Warcraft The Worldsoul Saga's reveal tralier.

World of Warcraft turns 20 next year, while the franchise itself will celebrate its 30-year anniversary. Ahead of those massive milestones, Blizzard went big with Warcraft at BlizzCon 2023. It launched a new mobile game, teased impending World of Warcraft Classic and Hearthstone updates, and announced three new World of Warcraft expansions that will make up The Worldsoul Saga. To franchise general manager John Hight, the series' strong showing was about demonstrating to players that Blizzard is doubling down on Warcraft.

“We wanted to tell our players that we’re doubling down on [World of Warcraft’s] story. A lot of our players have told us over the last two expansions that story is so important,” Hight told Digital Trends in an interview at BlizzCon 2023. “It is different for us at Blizzard because, normally, we’re a little bit secretive, but we felt like our fans were telling us they want to know more about what’s in store for them. It’s tricky to weave that in such a way that we didn’t spoil it.”

Gran Turismo 7’s impressive Sophy AI returns with expanded features
A first-person perspective of a Gran Turismo Sophy Race Together race in Gran Turismo 7.

After a brief stint in testing earlier this year, the Gran Turismo Sophy AI makes its return to Gran Turismo 7 today. The AI tool is now a permanent part of the racing game and comes with expanded functionality.

While all CPU racers in Gran Turismo 7 technically use some form of artificial intelligence, GT Sophy 2.0 is a much more autonomous and smart AI agent that has learned from player data and can match the skill level of top Gran Turismo players. Essentially, a race with GT Sophy 2.0 should feel like a race with another player. Sony AI tested GT Sophy across four cars and tracks in Gran Turismo 7 earlier this year, but that was only a limited-time mode. Now, GT Sophy is a permanent game feature in Gran Turismo 7.
Sony AI and developer Polyphony Digital revealed the news Wednesday morning, elaborating on the expanded functionality that comes as part of its reintroduction to the game through Gran Turismo 7 patch 1.40. Now going by the moniker GT Sophy 2.0, this advanced AI can now be used with 340 different cars across nine different tracks in Gran Turismo 7's Quick Race mode. While players can choose which track they want to race GT Sophy 2.0 on, the car will be chosen automatically "based on the car chosen from the player's garage," according to Sony AI.
In a press release, Sony says the test earlier this year "allowed the team to evaluate how well the neural network performed when embedded in the game and guided the engineering tasks involved in making the AI agent fully integrated." Those learnings allowed them to refine the AI further and expand its functionality, which any Gran Turismo 7 player on PlayStation 5 can now see after updating the game.
Gran Turismo 7 is available now on PlayStation 4 and PS5, although GT Sophy 2.0 only works on PS5.

EA Sports FC Tactical turns soccer into a free-to-play, turn-based RPG
ea sports fc tactical hands on skill move

EA’s FIFA series is going through some changes. For one, it’s not FIFA at all anymore. The series has officially made its transition into the new EA Sports FC brand with its recently released 2024 installment. That’s not the biggest surprise on the horizon for soccer fans, though; The sport is getting a surprising new mobile game with a left-field tactics twist.

EA Sports FC Tactical is an upcoming free-to-play spinoff that turns football into Fire Emblem. Co-developed with KLab Inc, the studio behind anime sports title Captain Tsubasa: Dream Team, the mobile game distills all the action of FC 2024 into a turn-based RPG. Every play is its own little tactical battle that pits strikers against defenders.
