Zer01 MVNO To Offer Contract-Free Unlimited Service…via VoIP

Zer01 MVNO To Offer Contract-Free Unlimited Service...via VoIP

As the economic hammer has come down, mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) from the likes of Disney, Amp’d, and Helio have either faded away or been acquired by larger mobile players, and the current climate would not seem to be ripe for starting up a new MVNO business. But don’t tell that to Zer01, which is now accepting pre-registrations for its forthcoming flat-rate, contract-free service. Zer01 says it will offer unlimited voice and data service for $69.95 a month once it launches, with no gotchas or hidden fees. Unlimited international service will be available for $79.95 a month.

Is there a catch? Kind of. Zer01 doesn’t operate using traditional switched voice networks: instead, it relies solely on 3G data service via AT&T and a custom VoIP application for Windows Mobile 6. Zer01 says it plans to launch its VoIP application for BlackBerry, Android, Symbian, and Java-capable phones in the future, and maybe even bring an application to jailbroken iPhones.

Unlike most current VoIP applications, Zer01’s VoIP application is set up to enable users to dial directly from their device’s keypad and works with Windows Mobile device’s integrated mics and earpieces. Zer01 also says their application offers good quality service even in areas wher AT&T 3G services isn’t available and the phone has to switch to lower-bandwidth EDGE and GPRS connectivity—which, if true, would be a neat trick.

Zer01 plans to announce its launch date in April, and commence a private beta of its service on April 1. Pre-registration is open now.

AT&T just made it a lot easier to upgrade your phone
AT&T Storefront with logo.

Do you want to upgrade your phone more than once a year? What about three times a year? Are you on AT&T? If you answered yes to those questions, then AT&T’s new “Next Up Anytime” early upgrade program is made for you. With this add-on, you’ll be able to upgrade your phone three times a year for just $10 extra every month. It will be available starting July 16.

Currently, AT&T has its “Next Up” add-on, which has been available for the past several years. This program costs $6 extra per month and lets you upgrade by trading in your existing phone after at least half of it is paid off. But the new Next Up Anytime option gives you some more flexibility.

The Nokia 3210 is the worst phone I’ve used in 2024
A person holding the Nokia 3210, showing the screen.

Where do I even start with the Nokia 3210? Not the original, which was one of the coolest phones to own back in a time when Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace wasn’t even a thing, but the latest 2024 reissue that has come along to save us all from digital overload, the horror of social media, and the endless distraction that is the modern smartphone.

Except behind this facade of marketing-friendly do-goodery hides a weapon of torture, a device so foul that I’d rather sit through multiple showings of Jar Jar Binks and the gang hopelessly trying to bring back the magic of A New Hope than use it.
The Nokia 3210 really is that bad
