Sony Lowers PS3 Price, Effective Immediately

Sony Lowers PS3 Price, Effective Immediately

At a press conference preceding the Games Com convention in Cologne, Germany, Sony has come up with a number of announcements about the PS3.

The biggest, beyond doubt, is that effective immediately it will be lowering the price of the console to $299 (in Europe it will be 299 Euros, and £249.99 in the UK). That could be a response to slow sales compared to its Xbox and Wii rivals, both of which are cheaper.

PS3 SlimThe company said it’s also ceasing production of the current console and introducing a slimmer model that will come with a 120GB hard drive, which will be available from the beginning of next month.

Kaz Hirai, head of Sony Entertainment, said:

"It has the same features and functionality [as the old PS3], but now it is 32% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% less power."

As if those two bombshells weren’t quite enough, Sony is also starting a video delivery service on Play Station Network that will allow users to rent or buy movies in standard or high definition for both the PS3 and PS3, starting in Europe this November, the BBC reports.

And the press conference gave the company a chance to demonstrate a new reader called Digital Comics for the PSP that lets users read DC Comics and graphic novels on their handhelds.

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

Surfaced patent shows what an Xbox streaming console would’ve looked like
An Xbox Series X sits next to both Series S models.

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
