In addition to the return of Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., Nintendo is giving the next-gen update to another of its couch-play classic, Mario Party. Announced as part of Nintendo’s E3 extravaganza, Mario Party 10 will come to the Wii U in 2015.

The game look like the standard mix of quick minigames spread across a board game map, until Bowser crashes the scene to introduce Bowser Party. This new mode casts one player as Bowser competing against the other four. Utilizing the GamePad controller, Bowser will be able to wreak havoc on the other players with fireballs and environmental hazards.

Mario Party 10 will also join Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart in supporting the recently-announced Amiibos (amiiboi?), though the exact details of how the figurines will work in this particular game are still unknown.

2023 was a roller coaster for the video games industry. On the software side, it was a historic year for new releases. We got everything from big success stories like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to memorable indies in Venba and Chants of Sennaar. But from the business side, 2023 was a lot more tumultuous. While some notable studio acquisitions and game announcements happened, thousands of developers were laid off, entire studios were shut down or hacked, and the provider of one of the most popular game engines landed in hot water after trying to roll out a controversial change.

The most notable gaming news stories of 2023 run the gamut from genuinely exciting to thoroughly disappointed. That speaks to a video game industry bound to head into an odd 2024 that lacks the known quantity bombshells of this year and continues to reel from layoffs. In last year's iteration of this article, my editor said that the 2020s are shaping up to be "the most pivotal decade in gaming history when all is said and done." If this year is anything to go by, that will almost certainly be true. These were the gaming stories that defined 2023, for better and much worse.

If 2023 was our last full year with the Nintendo Switch, what a heck of a sendoff it got.

The rumor mill has been buzzing for months now, claiming that Nintendo plans to reveal and release its Switch successor next year. While that’s a rumor you should take with some skepticism, there’s good reason to believe it may happen. Nintendo reportedly showed off the system to developers behind closed doors at Gamescom this year, and the Switch’s current 2024 lineup feels like the final drop we’d get right before a new system. The Switch could be old news this time next year.

For enthusiastic gamers, it was Christmas and the Super Bowl rolled into one trailer-full event.
