Capcom’s popular zombie franchise Dead Rising will get the live-action, feature-length film treatment, with the movie debuting on Crackle for its U.S. premiere.
As reported by ComingSoon, writer/producer Tim Carter is set to pen the script for the film and co-produce the adaptation with his Contradiction Films partner Tomas Harlan. The pair previously produced the popular Mortal Kombat: Legacy series that debuted on Machinima’s YouTube channel, and Carter served as a writer on the 2012 video game Sleeping Dogs.
The Dead Rising franchise kicked off in 2006, with each installment following various characters as they attempt to survive a zombie epidemic, first in a Colorado mall, then in a Nevada casino town, and then (in 2013’s Dead Rising 3) in the fictional city of Los Perdidos, California. Elements of each game’s plot revealed a government conspiracy that played a role in the creation and spread of the zombie virus.
While there’s no timetable reported for the project, Transformers and G.I. Joe franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is signed on to executive produce the Dead Rising film. It’s the first project produced by Legendary Pictures’ digital media division, Legendary Digital Media. The film will debut on Crackle — and its associated apps for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as mobile devices — and then subsequently become available via video-on-demand platforms.
