Samsung shatters the price floor on 4K with $1,000 sets for 2014

It’s the start of CE Week in New York, and Samsung is dropping Ultra HD bombs. The company today announced all new additions to its Ultra HD TV lineup, including another curved series to add to its repertoire, the HU7250 series, a new flat panel series in the HU6950, as well as a new 85-inch behemoth to add to its HU8550 series.

The new stable of UHD (aka 4K) TVs, bolsters Samsung’s already healthy lineup to six series, making up what the company calls “the broadest selection of UHD TVs” on the market. All of the new TVs have the latest UHD technology, including the HEVC (H.265) codec for top shelf 4K streaming at 60 frames per second, HDMI 2.0, and Samsung’s upgradeable One Connect Box.

85-inch HU8550

Samsung’s new 85-inch monster may sound larger than life, but it’s actually the baby brother of the largest in the HU8550 series, which stretches to 110 colossal inches. A top-tier series in Samsung’s UHD stable, HU8550 TVs offer a host of features including the company’s latest Smart technology, as well as performance features like UHD Dimming and Precision black for deep contrast, and blazing color performance. The 85-inch will be priced at $10,000 ($5,000 less than LG’s 84-inch monster), and is set to be released later this month.

HU7250 series

As you may have noticed by its cast of commercials, Samsung is pushing curved displays as the latest and greatest take on UHD TV design. With two new models, a 55-inch priced at $2,200, and a 65-inch priced at $3,300, the HU7250 series will be the most affordable way to get down on 4K in concave style when it arrives in August.

Samsung claims the curved design offers a wider field for a panoramic effect that delivers a more “true to life experience.” We haven’t necessarily found that to be true in our experience with the curve so far, but they are gorgeous TVs that bring a modern spark to their surroundings. Highlighted features for the new HU7250 TVs include UHD upscaling, UHD Dimming, and Quad Screen Multi-link, which allows viewers to split the screen into four panels to watch multiple sources at once.

HU6950 series

Sitting at the lower tier of Samsung’s UHD stable, the HU6950 offer an affordable way to get into Samsung’s brand of 4K TV. The new series offers 3 new models, including a remarkably affordable $1,000 40-inch, a $1,500 50-inch, and a $2,000 55-inch. Though the TVs are priced to move, they still offer a nice selection of features that match up with their UHD brethren, including quad-core processors, UHD Dimming, and Quad Screen Multi-link. The HU6950 series is slated for release in June.

Samsung has shown that the company is doubling down on UHD TVs, and it doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. We hope to have some of these new models in for review soon, so stay tuned.

Samsung 65-inch QN85C QLED 4K Smart TV — $1,500, was $2,000

We find the QN85C to be sitting at just about the perfect price for a TV right now, while still maintaining the qualities and freshness of a much more quality TV. While it is 4K, it uses mini-LED tech, which allows for fine-tuned light control. Remember that the best QLED TVs are typically renowned more for their brightness than contrast; this tech can tip that need for contrast in the QN85C's favor. Other great features of this TV include audio with Dolby Atmos and Object Tracking Sound, 4K upscaling, and motion acceleration to keep fast moving content smooth.
