Sure, 3D technology might require people to put on a pair of awkward-looking glasses to appreciate the depth of field and experience visuals jumping out at them—but soon all the cool kids will be doing it right? Computer maker Acer sure hopes so, announcing its new Acer Aspire 5738DG notebook with a 15.6-inch 1,366 by 768 display with TriDef 3D technology: with the right software (and the right glasses!) users can experience pop-out 3D content as it was meant to be seen. Plus, the system can take 2D content and jazz it up with 3D effects—and users can pop back to a standard 2D experience for email, the Web, and everyday tasks with a single click.

“This holiday season, we are seeing 3D content become more prevalent in popular films and games,” said Acer senior product manager Ray Sawall, in a statement. “The new Acer Aspire 5738DG notebook enables consumers to enjoy exciting new 3D entertainment on a mobile PC that can also replicate a 3D experience from standard 2D content.”

The 15.6-inch display is coasted with a film that enables the LCD display to show a 3D image—again, so long as people are wearing a pair of funky 3D polarizing glasses, which Acer thoughtfully will include with the notebook. Users can use the TriDef Media player for display of 3D content and photos, while the TriDef Ignition tool pushes 2D content and games into the 3D realm—and it supports DirectX 9 and newer.

Under the hood, the Acer Aspire 5738DG sports a 2.23 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics with 512 MB of video RAM, 4 GB of system memory, a 320 GB hard drive, a multi-in-one digital media card reader, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless networking, an 8× Super Multi DVD burner, an integrated webcam, multigesture trackpad, four USB 2.0 ports, and a total weight of just over 6 pounds.

Acer says the Aspire AS5738DG-6165 will be available this week at major retailers with prices starting at $779.99; Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit is pre-installed.

Glasses-free 3D gaming can be amazing — but only if it’s done right
Lies of P on Samsung's glasses-free 3D gaming monitor at CES 2024.

Glasses-free 3D is making a comeback. And please -- don't roll your eyes and write this off as a gimmick just yet.

I saw two similar 3D gaming monitors at CES last week that used this technology and tracked your eyes to fool you into seeing depth in a 2D screen. It's pretty convincing stuff, especially for games. I really want to see this technology come to fruition, but based on what I've seen so far, it needs to be done the right way if it hopes to get people's attention. The term "3D" has left a bad taste in people's mouths, and if this new wave of monitors wants to undo that, it needs to make a good first impression.

Samsung has a 3D gaming monitor that doesn’t need glasses — and it actually works
Lies of P on Samsung's glasses-free 3D gaming monitor at CES 2024.

I've never been interested in the glasses-free 3D craze that's carried on for years, but Samsung finally sold me. It showed off a new concept for a glasses-free 3D monitor at CES 2024, and I had a chance to try it out. And I'm probably just as shocked as you are that it actually works.

This isn't a product -- not yet, at least -- but a bit of technology that Samsung is showing off early. It's the aptly-named Samsung 2D/3D monitor right now. The monitor works with eye tracking. Two cameras at the top of the display track your eyes, and they can transform any game from a flat 2D image into 3D.
