Google continues to shift away from Google+, Photos going solo

After rolling Google Hangouts into a separate tool that doesn’t require a Google+ login, Google’s next move with the search company’s social network is to repeat the process with the popular Photos tool. Arguably one of the best features of Google+, the Photos tool gained early acclaim from photographers at the launch of Google+ for a number of reasons. For instance, the maximum photo width on Facebook at the time was around 700px wide. Google allowed photographers the ability to upload pictures that were 2048px wide, an ideal layout for anyone with a 1080p monitor.

In addition to the increased width, Photos offered features such as a lightbox overall for viewing photos, tags that could be sized based off the person’s face, large image previews in the Google+ content feed, desktop click & drag for uploading photos and an instant upload feature to save a backup of pictures take with a mobile phone. Of course, Facebook slowly responded to Google+ over the last few years in an attempt to match many of these features.

Reported first by Bloomberg earlier today, the Google+ Photos feature will work as a standalone product and not require signing up for a Google+ account in the future. The service will likely be rebranded prior to launch and operate similar to a photo service like Flickr. Similar to Google+ Hangouts, Google+ users will still be able to use the Photos tool. The company is also continuing to revise the product with the recent addition of selective editing tools during early July 2014.

That being said, Google is clearly undercutting the social network, a shift that’s been slowly pushing forward since the man behind Google+, Vic Gundotra, left the company. In addition, Google was fairly silent about Google+ during the recent Google I/O 2014 conference during late June. The company also shifted away from the real name policy during mid-July 2014, basically opening the door for new accounts with fake names.

We take pride in curating our feeds, making them look all fancy for our audience. But what about making them look fancy on our wall? Thankfully several platforms give us the option of printing our favorite photos from Instagram. However, there are a few things you need to know before you go ahead and do so. Here's how to get the best results when printing from Instagram and all the best places where you can make it happen.
What Instagram photos can you print, and how big can you print them?
First, beware that these tools for printing Instagram photos are designed exclusively for printing your own shots. Printing someone else’s photograph that you swipe off of Instagram is photo theft. If you see a photo on Instagram you’d really love on your wall, reach out via a comment or private message to arrange a print with the original photographer. Don’t be that Instagram user that finds a way to beat the system to steal someone else’s work.

Second, Instagram doesn’t save your photograph in all its high-resolution glory. Images are downsized to just 1,080 pixels wide -- that's fine for a small phone screen, but won't hold up for a large print. Instagram photos can still make great prints, but they should be kept under five inches wide -- such as a 5 by 5 for a square shot. If you try to print out an 11 by 14, you’ll end up with a pixelated print. For larger prints, find the original photo and make a print from that -- you'll lose whatever edits you made in Instagram, however, so you may want to edit in a different app first.

Facebook on Monday announced a new feature that will begin rolling out in Ireland before spreading elsewhere: The ability to transfer your Facebook photos directly to other platforms without having to download them first. The feature will initially only port your pics over to Google Photos, though it's likely more platforms are on the way.

This is a step forward from Facebook's already-existing data portability tool, “Download Your Information,” which allows a user to keep a copy of everything they’ve ever put on Facebook on their private computer. In a statement, Facebook told Digital Trends that “the feedback we’ve received over the years tells us that although this tool is helpful, it isn’t seamless enough for users to take information directly from one service to another.”
