In an interview with Collider, Renner indicated that his character could return for the sequel to Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
“There are rumblings of Captain America 3,” he said when asked about his upcoming schedule. “I don’t know what’s going to happen there. I’ve got to find the time, man.”
Given the multi-film contract that all of the Marvel Studios actors generally have to sign, it would make sense for Renner’s character to appear in another film on the horizon — though it remains to be seen how his screen time will be affected by the introduction of Anthony Mackie as Falcon in The Winter Soldier. After Renner’s comments were publicized, SuperHeroHype had the opportunity to ask the directors of the next Captain America movie, Anthony and Joe Russo, about the likelihood of seeing Hawkeye again in the near future.
“Unfortunately we can’t (comment),” said Anthony. “It’s too specific to what the movie may be.”
“There are certainly characters that Cap is close to or has a strong relationship with that would make sense appearing in his films,” added Joe. “I think that’s all we can say about it.”
The third Captain America movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters May 6, 2016.
