Samsung’s new 32-inch 4K monitor could be a photo editor’s dream

Around this time last year, you had to shell out thousands of dollars for a 4K monitor. Today, the cost of these displays has come down considerably. Even professional-class 4K displays, like Samsung’s new UD970 monitor, are much cheaper than they would’ve been one year ago. However, that doesn’t mean they’re “affordable.”

Covered in a dark grayish bezel and propped up by a square base and rectangular neck of the same color, the Samsung UD970 is a 31.5-inch display with a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. Samsung says that the UD970 sports a glare-minimizing panel, along with a viewing angle of 178 degrees.

However, the company’s boldest claims regard color accuracy: Samsung contests that the UD970 can produce 99.5 percent of the Adobe RGB color gamut, and 100 percent of sRGB.

On top of that, with the UD970, you won’t need to hook up a second monitor to your computer to see two video sources at the same time. The UD970 has the ability to display picture in picture. You can also split the screen by two, or by four.

All of these high-end features wouldn’t be complete without a fully adjustable stand, and the UD970 delivers. You can adjust the monitor by swiveling or pivoting it, change its height, and even flip it 90 degrees to orient it in portrait mode. Port selection consists of five USB 3.0, along with one DVI, two DisplayPort, one HDMI, and a headphone jack as well.

Simply put, the Samsung UD970 is best suited for professionals, like photo and video editors, and people who could benefit from cramming as much data onto one screen as possible. Think Wall Street and other financial types, who spend significant amounts of time staring at charts and spreadsheets. But if you have cash to burn, anyone who can splurge on this display will likely be very happy with it.

The Samsung UD970 will be available starting sometime this month, and will carry a price tag of $2,000.
