Netflix subscribers around the world will get the first peek at Gotham after the new television series’ debut season, according to an agreement announced this week between the streaming video service and Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution.

The upcoming FOX series, which follows a young Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as he tries to wrest control of the city of Gotham from a rapidly growing criminal element, will be available exclusively on Netflix in various countries after each season. The series premieres September 22 in the U.S.

“While we typically license our programming country by country, we have licensed this very special series to Netflix on a multi-territory basis,” said Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, President of Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution, in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Netflix is a perfect home for Gotham following its initial broadcast in each respective country, giving Netflix subscribers the opportunity to catch-up prior to the new season, whether they’re already fans or discovering it for the first time.”

Offering an origin story for the fictional city where Bruce Wayne became an orphan and eventually donned the cape and cowl of Batman, Gotham features a long list of heroes, villains, and supporting characters from The Dark Knight’s history, including quite a few of his most famous rogues. Along with McKenzie in the role of James Gordon, the series’s cast also includes Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock (Gordon’s partner), Jada Pinkett Smith as gangster Fish Mooney, Robin Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot (the man who will become The Penguin), Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle (the future Catwoman), and David Mazouz as a young Bruce Wayne.

“Gotham is the most anticipated new series of the fall season and we are thrilled to offer it to our members around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix. “The Batman origin story is sure to have massive global appeal so it is fitting that, along with Warner Television, we have created a new model for distributing a show that international and domestic audiences will love.”

3 Body Problem is no longer Netflix’s most popular show. Here’s what dethroned the sci-fi series
A man walks towards the haunted Myrtles Plantation in Files of the Unexplained.

When William Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet that "there are more things in heaven and Earth ... than are dreamt of in your philosophy," he wasn't arguing that UFOs and unexplained phenomena are real. But it was an acknowledgement that there is a limit to what humanity can know and explain through science alone. The same basic principle applies centuries later to the new paranormal docuseries Files of the Unexplained, which has become one of the most popular shows on Netflix.

Shows like Files of the Unexplained aren't part of a new genre, and it's not even the only series like this on Netflix. So why is Files of the Unexplained such a big hit out of the gate, so much so that it replaced the high-profile -- and very expensive -- sci-fi show 3 Body Problem? In part, it's because Files of the Unexplained finds a way to speak to both skeptics and believers while also offering a glimpse at lesser-known incidents that don't easily fit into the little boxes that we call reality.

Like the hit Netflix true crime series The Program? Then watch these 3 shows now
A group of teenagers on their knees in 'The Program.'

There are plenty of great Netflix shows about basically whatever it might be that you want to watch. Among the many things that Netflix is great at is true crime docuseries, which it has released steadily since its earliest days as a streamer.

One of those recent documentaries is The Program: Cons, Cults and Kidnapping, which tells the story of one woman who decides to expose the seedy underbelly behind the "troubled teen" industry. The documentary is riveting from beginning to end, but if you've already finished it, we've found three other docuseries that might be great follow-ups. Not all of these docs are the easiest to watch, but if you want something thrilling, these will fit the bill.
