Samsung said late Tuesday its Gear S smartwatch will hit the US market “this fall,” with the four major carriers – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon – all offering the device.
Beyond that, details are somewhat scant, though the tech giant promises that more information, including pricing, is “coming soon.”
The Gear S was first shown off at the IFA trade show in Berlin earlier this month, marking itself out as one of the few smartwatches among the current crop that can function, for the most part, independently of a smartphone.
Equipped with its own SIM card, the device can be used for calls and messages, as well as other tasks you might ordinarily associate with a smartphone.
The wrist-based gadget runs on Samsung’s own Tizen OS, and, like many smartwatches on the market, goes big on health and fitness features. The incorporated S Health workout suite, for example, helps you count steps, map out running routes, and track a slew of fitness data.
The Gear S, which packs a dual-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage, also features a heart-rate monitor, a UV sensor, a barometer, and motion sensors.
DT’s mobile expert Andy Boxall managed to get the Gear S on his wrist at IFA in a bid to see what Samsung’s standalone smartwatch is all about.
The device’s curved Super AMOLED 2-inch touchscreen display really stood out for Andy, which he described as “absolutely stunning,” although its large size means it’s “not the world’s most subtle watch.”
