Filmed by a creative team for European mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse, this unique unboxing video of the Sony Xperia Z3 was filmed completely underwater. Sony specifically touts the IP65/68 rating of the Xperia Z3, a metric that determines how susceptible a device is to water and dust. This particular rating means that the Xperia Z3 is protected from an infiltration of dust as well as from complete, continuous submersion in water. It’s also rated for submersion up to 1.5 meters and can take pictures when submerged in fresh water up to 30 minutes.
In the video, the person unboxing the smartphone is wearing submersible head gear that allows him to speak about the unboxing as well as breath normally during the video shoot. While covering the phone’s most interesting features, the cardboard box and paper instructions are seen floating away. However, the plug and other accessories in the box remained submerged on the unboxing table.
The narrator of the video was able to successfully power up the phone and jump directly into camera mode to take a short video of the other members of the Carphone Warehouse production team. In addition, he snapped a couple photos with the phone, a still of one of the people under the pool with him as well as an underwater selfie. Both photos were relatively sharp and clear, more so than the sample video.
This isn’t the only creative unboxing video that’s been making the rounds on social networks. Earlier this month, the Blue Man Group released an unboxing video of the iPhone 6. However, the comedic twist of the video was that the group continued to repair the box after trying to open it with a knife, power saw, hand saw and drill. The ridiculous restoration items included duct tape, Play-Doh, fuzzy fabric, green tape, Band-aids, cellophane, wrapping paper and glitter.
