After Warner Bros. announced an ambitious slate of upcoming superhero movies scheduled to arrive in theaters through 2020, speculation naturally turned to the cast and directors that would be matched up with many of the features — particularly the filmmaker that would helm Wonder Woman, the upcoming solo film that will star Gal Gadot as the iconic heroine. According to a new report, the studio is hoping to find a similarly strong woman to direct the project.

In an article about WB’s crowded calendar of superhero films on the horizon, The Hollywood Reporter indicates that the studio is looking for a female director to helm Wonder Woman, which will follow the famous goddess of war (or Amazon princess, depending on which comics continuity the film draws from) in an adventure that will likely lead into Justice League, Part One later that year. Gadot will make her debut as Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder.

Hollywood isn’t exactly brimming with high-profile female filmmakers, so the studio’s quest could involve bringing a lesser-known director into the spotlight. The most high-profile female filmmaker currently active in the industry is Kathryn Bigelow, who won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker. Jennifer Yuh’s Kung Fu Panda 2 received an Oscar nomination in 2012 as the prior year’s best animated feature.

Thus far, the only female director to helm a recent comic-book movie is Lexi Alexander, who helmed 2008’s uber-violent Punisher: War Zone, which was both a commercial and critical flop. Monster director Patty Jenkins was initially attached to direct Thor: The Dark World, but eventually left the project and was replaced by Alan Taylor.

Wonder Woman is scheduled to hit theaters June 23, 2017, so there’s still quite a bit of time to continue the studio’s search.

Martin Scorsese: film director, movie lover, TikTok star?
Martin Scorcese at the premiere of "Shutter Island."

Martin "Marty" Scorsese is rightly heralded by many critics, peers, and moviegoers as America's greatest living director. No one can argue with that designation for a man whose filmography includes Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, After Hours, The Age of Innocence, The Gangs of New York, The Departed, Hugo, Silence, and many, many more classics. And the 80-year-old director shows no signs of slowing down, with his latest movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, already reaping some of the best notices of his already impressive career.

With his Academy Award for Best Director, a Grammy for the excellent Bob Dylan documentary No Direction Home, and several Emmys already to his credit, Scorsese can add one more laurel to his awards mantle: TikTok star. Yep, that's right, the director of Goodfellas is now a breakout star on the social media platform thanks to his daughter, Francesca, who is herself a filmmaker, actress, and a prominent influencer. It's Francesca who brought Marty onto TikTok via several comedic Q&As, skits, and interviews that played on the generational and gender gaps between father and daughter. Here are a few TikToks that track the rise of Martin Scorsese as one of the platform's most unlikely stars.

The first notable instance when Scorsese pops up on Francesca's TikTok is on March 26, 2021, when his daughter shows him a series of pictures of feminine items and asks him to guess what they are:

5 best action movie directors, ranked
Christopher Nolan with a film camera.

Action movies have long been some of the most popular and beloved pictures in cinema history, and they wouldn't have gotten to where they are today without some incredible innovators. Acclaimed directors like John Woo (Face/Off), the Wachowskis (The Matrix), and John McTiernan (Die Hard) have given audiences some memorable movies featuring explosions, shootouts, car crashes, sword battles, and kung fu fights, and these all sometimes happen in the same scene.

But these films aren't just shots of mindless action spliced together. Out of the many directors who have created countless action movies, only a select few have had enough precision, resources, and imagination to make beautiful and thoughtful masterpieces of the genre. Specifically, these five directors brought audiences some of cinema's greatest action movies, and their work should serve as examples for film students who aspire to do the same.
