Forbidden fruit: Audi’s go-fast RS Q3 family gets more power and a minor facelift for 2015

Audi has given the Q3 and RS Q3 a subtle makeover for 2015, in what will likely be the final update of the compact SUV’s first generation.

Although the aesthetic changes are easy to miss at first glance, the tweaks become more and more apparent the longer you look. Audi’s familiar trapezoid front grill is increasingly angular on both cars now, and the silver ‘Singleframe’ surround connects the headlights into a cohesive, t–shaped face.

The front air vents are much bolder new as well, and the xenon headlights (LEDS are optional) have been redesigned and reshaped. The result is a blockier, more expressive fascia for 2015, but to be honest it looks a bit less refined than before.

The go-fast crossovers didn’t just go under the knife for their mid-cycle facelift, they clearly went to the gym as well.

The Q3 boasts up to a 10-horsepower bump depending on engine choice, which ranges from a 2.0-liter TDI with 147 hp to a 2.0-liter TFSI gas unit with 221 hp. Audi claims up to a 17 percent increase in fuel efficiency throughout the lineup.

The range-topping RS Q3 retains the 2.5-liter five-cylinder from 2014, but it’s been bolstered by 30 hp for a new total output of 340 hp. Channeled through the RS’ quattro all-wheel drive system, the hopped-up Q3 can now reach 60 mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds.

For those who are counting, that’s .7 seconds faster than before. There’s still only one exhaust outlet, but the German automaker has added controllable flaps inside the piping for increased control over the five-banger’s sound.

Deliveries of the Q3 will begin in February 2015 with a base price of just under $37,000, while the $70,000 RS Q3 will go on sale sometime during 2015’s first quarter.

Mercedes-Benz G580 first drive: old-school off-roader goes electric
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

American car buyers mostly know Mercedes-Benz as a luxury brand. But for decades, the automaker has also produced the tough, rugged G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen), an SUV not afraid to get its leather upholstery muddy. And now, this iconic Mercedes is going electric.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology — the final name of the SUV previously known as the EQG — isn’t the first electric off-roader. The Rivian R1S and R1T and GMC Hummer EV have proven that electric powertrains and off-roading are a great combination. But the electric G-Wagen is different because it’s based on an internal-combustion model — and a very traditional one at that.

Honda believes hydrogen semi trucks will make the case for fuel cells
Honda hydrogen fuel-cell semi truck.

Honda remains committed to hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but the market for those vehicles remains limited. So Honda is looking at other uses for fuel cells -- including commercial trucks.

To show how that could work, Honda converted a semi truck to fuel-cell power, replacing its diesel engine with three fuel-cell modules. Together, the three modules produce a combined 321 horsepower, and can propel the truck to a top speed of 70 mph. There's enough onboard hydrogen storage capacity for a 400-mile range with a full load, Honda claims.

Mercedes-Benz G580 vs Rivian R2: Is the much cheaper Rivian actually better?
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the wraps off of the new "Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology." Yeah, it's a mouthful, but it's basically a new electric G-Wagon. It looks a lot like the G-Wagon you know and love, but with an electric powertrain and a battery. It's not the only electric SUV out there, however, and there are some great ones -- like the Rivian R2.

Both the Mercedes G580 and the Rivian R2 have a lot going for them, but they also approach the electric SUV slightly differently. Is one better than the other? I put the two head-to-head to find out.

The approach that the two vehicles take to design is quite different -- and you might like one better than the other.
