According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest writer to work on the screenplay for the film is Oscar-winner Mark Boal, who penned the screenplays for The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. Boal is reportedly a fan of the video game, and was brought on to polish up an existing script penned by Safe House writer David Guggenheim.
Boal is the latest in a series of writers to work on the film, which originated with a script from Oscar nominee David O. Russell that had little to do with the game itself and was ultimately scrapped. After bringing in various other screenwriters, the most recent version was penned by Guggenheim and reportedly generated the most excitement from the studio.
Said to be based on the first game of the series, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, the movie is expected to follow treasure-hunter Nathan Drake (the descendent of Sir Francis Drake) as he criss-crosses the world in search of a hidden golden city. In the game, he’s joined in his quest by his longtime partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan and a journalist, Elena Fisher.
The film still has to find its leading man, with both original star Mark Wahlberg dropping out after Russell’s script was scrapped and recent rumored contender Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) passing on the project.
Directed by Seth Gordon, Uncharted is scheduled to hit theaters on June 10, 2016.
