If rumors from Korea are correct, LG could have taken the decision to drop the G Pro series of big-screen smartphones, so it can concentrate on making the G4 flagship phone the very best it can. The news comes from unnamed industry insiders talking to the Korea Herald, where it’s said the G Pro’s similarity to the G3, in terms of screen size, is the prime reason for the move.
The LG G Pro 2 made its debut at Mobile World Congress in February, and is equipped with a massive 5.9-inch, 1080p screen. Considered the standard for high-end smartphones at the time, 1080p panels have since been superseded by Quad HD screens seen on the G3 and Samsung’s Note 4. Its sister phone, the G2, had a 5.2-inch display.
It does make some sense. LG’s G3 has a 5.5-inch Quad HD screen, so unless LG increases the G Pro 3’s size to over 6-inches – and therefore into small tablet territory – there will be little to differentiate the two. Over at Samsung, the Note 4, which should be considered the G Pro’s natural competitor, has a 5.7-inch display, while the Galaxy S5 has a noticeably smaller 5.1-inch screen. Another reason for dropping the high-end G Pro series is more affordable, mid-range hardware such as the G3 Screen, which also has a 5.9-inch screen, but with a more modest 720p resolution.
The report seems to indicate the as-yet unofficial G Pro 3 will stay with a 5.9-inch screen, but isn’t clear whether the phone will be announced as the final model in the range, or if LG has abandoned the device entirely. The G3 isn’t due for replacement until well into 2015, but it’s going to be a tough act to follow, so the more time LG has to work on it, the better.
