Pebble, the Kickstarter darling that went on to become an international blockbuster, has fared well against new smartwatches from big-name competitors. The key to its continued success lies both in its platform agnosticism and prescience. Pebble has responded well to the changing trends of the budding wearable market. In late September, the Pebble and its pricier companion, the Pebble Steel, saw respective price reductions to $100 and $200. And recently, Pebble’s software was updated to allow for continuous fitness monitoring.

Some speculated those moves were fueled by the debut of Android Wear devices, which occupy the same price bracket and sport identical functionality. The features of Pebble’s newer firmware, however, are a little more brazenly aimed at would-be Wear owners. Last month, the Pebble received full notification support for Android devices running 4.3 or later, and now, the development team is taking the next logical step forward.

Software version 2.3, currently in beta, lets Pebble users interact with Android notifications. Much like behavior on Android Wear, alerts from many apps are actionable — an SMS message can be replied to, for example, or Square Cash requests accepted, an e-mail archived, or a phone call answered. As Pebble has no touchscreen, users rely on its physical buttons to scroll through and select actions.

The Pebble team achieved the new interactions by tapping into the notification which underlies Android and Android Wear. That means developers won’t have to make changes to take advantage of the feature. “Integrating Pebble with Android Wear is thanks to [Google’s] open approach,” a note on Pebble’s blog reads.

The update, which also includes support for auto app updates and Android 4.0+ devices, will be distributed through Google Play to owners who sign up for Pebble’s beta channel.

Google’s Wear smartwatch software update list is short, and the wait is long
Main menu on the TicWatch E3.

If you’re waiting for news on when, or if, your Wear OS smartwatch will receive an update to the new version of the software announced during Google I/O, there’s some good and bad news ahead. Google has listed the smartwatches eligible for an upgrade, and the timeframe expected, but neither are likely to be what smartwatch owners were hoping for.

The new version of Wear OS, which Google refers to as Wear OS 3 but had introduced it as Wear before, will eventually arrive on the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 and its 4G/LTE connected counterpart, and the TicWatch E3, plus unannounced models from Fossil and Mobvoi expected later in 2021. It won’t be arriving very quickly either; as Google states that it “expects our partners to be able to roll out the system update starting in mid to second half of 2022.”

Google Wear update picks up remote app installation and a redesigned Play Store
The Google Keep app on Wear OS

Google rolled out a new update to Wear OS watches today, making it easier to install apps remotely and refreshing the Play Store with an Android 12-style Material You redesign.

Writing in a brief blog post, the company shared that users could now search for Wear-supported apps on the Play Store on mobile. All they needed to do was to add "Watch" or "Watch Face" to a search term when using the Play Store, and Google would serve up apps that support the wearable operating system. This means that you would be able to search up "music apps Watch Face" to surface a list of music apps that support Wear once this update rolls out. A new "Wear OS" and "Watch Faces for Wear OS" page in the Play Store will allow window shoppers a chance to browse for apps that they may not have heard of before. You can then install apps to any compatible watches remotely. Google says that it'll be pre-selecting devices that support this to make it easier for Wear OS users.
