First trailer for Fantastic Four warns you to be ready for what’s coming

Rumors and speculation have surrounded director Josh Trank’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot due to the secrecy surrounding the project, but now some questions have been answered with the debut of the first footage from the film.

The trailer, which clocks in at just under two minutes, takes a decidedly more somber tone than the lighthearted 2005 film. The focus of the first preview of the film seems to be on the tragic accident that gives the Marvel Comics superhero team their powers — abilities that end up being both a blessing and a curse.

Along with introducing the characters pre-accident, the footage teases some of the abilities they gain from the experiment gone wrong, with particular attention to Chronicle actor Michael B. Jordan’s version of Johnny Storm, a.k.a. The Human Torch.

There’s also a brief shot of Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm, the rock-covered behemoth known as The Thing, and a blink-and-you-miss-it scene featuring Kate Mara’s Sue Storm wielding one of her character’s force fields. conspicuously absent, however, is a definitive shot of Whiplash actor Miles Teller making use of Reed Richards’ stretching and bending body, which is hinted at in one brief sequence but not shown.

It’s also worth noting that the team seems to be going with black jumpsuits rather than anything resembling the traditional, blue uniforms the heroes have sported in various iterations of the comic-book series over the years.

In a recent interview with Collider, Trank cited The Fly director David Cronenberg’s work as a major influence on his vision for the film, as well as the more contemporary, “Ultimate” version of the team published by Marvel Comics.

Written by X-Men: Days of Future Past screenwriter Simon Kinberg, Fantastic Four also stars Dawn of the Planet of the Apes actor Toby Kebbell as Doctor Doom, Reg E. Cathey (The Wire) as Dr. Franklin Storm, and Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) as Harvey Elder, the team’s recurring foe in the comics known as “Mole Man.”

Fantastic Four hits theaters August 7.

How many Fantastic Four movies are there and where can you watch them?
The cast of the 2005 Fantastic Four movie.

It's been nearly a decade since the last Fantastic Four reboot, but the next one is just around the corner. Marvel Studios has announced the cast of The Fantastic Four, which will arrive in theaters on July 25, 2025. Since that's over a year away, we're taking the opportunity to look back at all four of the previous Fantastic Four movies to date, including the unreleased version from 1994.

None of these films have fully captured the spirit of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four comic books, which laid the foundations for the Marvel Universe as we know it. But most of the films have some redeeming qualities, even the 1994 Fantastic Four movie. And because all four of these movies are now streaming, we're also going to tell you where you can watch them.

3 great movies & shows featuring The Fantastic Four’s Joseph Quinn
Joseph Quinn in Dickensian.

After his fan-favorite turn as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things 4, we knew that Joseph Quinn was heading for bigger and better roles. Earlier this week, that prediction came true when it was confirmed that Quinn will portray Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, in Marvel's The Fantastic Four.

Some fans who aren't familiar with Quinn's work outside of Stranger Things have voiced concerns about him taking the role, since Eddie and Johnny are two very different characters. Rest assured, Marvel Studios wouldn't have cast Quinn in such an important role if they weren't convinced that he had the range to pull it off. To help allay any lingering fears about that, we're throwing the spotlight on three movies and shows featuring Quinn. He hasn't had too many credits to date, but Quinn has made the most out of the ones that he's had.

Marvel Studios finally announces its Fantastic Four cast
The cast of "The Fantastic Four."

It's been almost a decade since the last cinematic reboot of the Fantastic Four, and now Marvel Studios has announced which performers will be taking the four pivotal roles in the upcoming film based on the team of superheroes. Marvel dropped the news on Valentine's Day with a piece of artwork that revealed Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the Fantastic Four.

Pascal is best known for starring in both The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, as well as for his memorable role as Prince Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones season 4. He will portray Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, the leader of the Fantastic Four. Kirby will co-star as the Invisible Woman, Susan Storm, but it's unclear if Reed and Sue will be married in this incarnation. Kirby's previous credits include the last two Mission: Impossible films, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Jupiter Ascending.
