LG rectified Snapdragon 810’s overheating issues, so the G Flex 2 and G4 will stay on track

Even though LG has reported record smartphone sales for 2014, the biggest question for many revolves around what it’s doing about Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 810 processor. After all, the chipset is allegedly beset by overheating issues, yet it’s being used in the G Flex 2, and possibly for the rumored G4 smartphone too. During the company’s earnings call, where it confirmed the impressive 60 million phone shipments, LG said it had fixed early issues with the chip.

LG did admit it ran into some problems with the initial batch of Snapdragon 810 processors from Qualcomm. However, the company said the issues have been dealt with. As a result, the upcoming G Flex 2 and G4 smartphones will be released on time. This jives with previous comments by LG, where the performance of the Snapdragon 810 processor was described as “quite satisfactory.”

The issues surrounding the Snapdragon 810 are to do with the chipset overheating, which then causes throttling. Throttling is most noticeable when playing games, though a struggling processor can also cause slowdown during general navigation of the user interface.

The G Flex 2 is launching very soon, with the G4 expected to follow it in the coming months, but the news for Samsung’s Galaxy S6 may not be so good. We’ll have to wait and see if it’ll be the Snapdragon 810’s first casualty until the phone’s launch, when it could come with a Samsung-produced Exynos chip inside. Either way, we’ll find out in the coming months how the Snapdragon 810 fares inside various flagship smartphones.
