A phone leaked as the HTC A55 has the potential to be one of the most exciting and unusual phones of the year so far, should the information prove correct. Why? It’s supposed to be a new entry into HTC’s usually reasonably priced Desire range, set for a late February launch, and be equipped with a large 5.5-inch, 1440p resolution touchscreen. HTC has been steadily improving the Desire series for a while, and the new designs are really attractive, but this would mean it’ll trump the current flagship One M8 in terms of pixel count.
The news comes through the @upleaks Twitter account, so it’s unofficial for now, but we’ve also seen plenty of potential One M9 leaks from it over the past few months, making a knowledgeable inside source a distinct possibility.
Like several other HTC Desire smartphones, it’s speculated the A55 will come with a MediaTek processor, with the octa-core MT6795 chip running at 2.0GHz listed as the prime candidate. It’s also possible the processor will be supported by 3GB of RAM, making it one of the most powerful Desire models released.
The camera hasn’t been left out either, and the leak states the rear camera will have 20 megapixels, while HTC will use an UltraPixel camera around the front. It has recently used this tactic on the HTC Desire 826, and is also rumored to do so on the HTC One M9 or one of its possible variants. Other features may include a set of BoomSound speakers, 32GB of internal storage space, and a slightly disappointing sub-3000mAh battery. Finally, Android 5.0 should be installed along with Sense 7.0 over the top.
If the leak is accurate, we should be on the look out for the A55 at the end of February, a date which is very close to Mobile World Congress. The company has already announced a press event for March 1, where we could end up meeting the One M9 for the first time. If the A55 is going to have a 1440p screen, then it would make sense for HTC to reveal it alongside the One M9 – which is also rumored to have a Quad HD screen – rather than beforehand.
We’ll be at HTC’s event on the day, and will keep you up to date with any A55 developments in the meantime.
