It’s been four years since Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hit theaters, but that film’s impressive performance at the box office (despite underwhelming reviews) ensured a fifth installment of the hit franchise was on the way. Now Disney has offered up the official synopsis of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, along with news that production on the film has officially begun in Australia.
The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas
It should probably come as no surprise that the film will feature the return of franchise star Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, with Geoffrey Rush (as Barbossa), Kevin R. McNally (Joshamee Gibbs), and Stephen Graham (Scrum) also reprising their roles. Newcomers to the franchise this time around will be Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner), Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent), and Golshifteh Farahani (Exodus: Gods and Kings).
Set to be directed by Kon-Tiki filmmakers Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning, the upcoming film should provide an interesting gauge on Depp’s ability to draw an audience after a series of underperforming films — most recently, the crime caper Mortdecai.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is expected to arrive in theaters July 7, 2017.
