Microsoft has always promoted the Xbox One as more of an all-around entertainment machine than “just” a game console. This was largely true even at launch, and the console’s entertainment features have only increased over time. Now, to further add to the fun, Epix has announced the launch of its app on Xbox One.

The Epix app offers on-demand streaming of movies, concerts, and comedy specials, and also allows users to watch the live Epix channels within the app.

This is a deal that has been in the works for some time — we reported that Epix was headed to the Xbox One almost exactly one year ago. We aren’t sure what took so long, especially as the app is already available on smartphones, Roku devices, and even the Xbox 360, but Epix is making up for the long wait in more ways than one.

From now until March 31, Epix is offering a free 14-day trial for Xbox One owners. If you don’t own an Xbox One, Epix may be able to help with that, too. It is giving one away to celebrate the launch of the app. After the 14-day trial is up, users will need to connect via a TV subscription in order to continue using the app.

If you aren’t a cable or satellite subscriber, you can still have access to Epix, just not through the Epix app. Sling TV, which launched on the Xbox One earlier this month, also offers the live Epix channels. While it doesn’t allow access to all of the Epix on-demand catalog, if the movie or concert in question is currently in rotation on any of the live channels, it can be watched at any time.

If you’re interested in checking out the app or maybe just hoping to snag yourself a free Xbox 360, head over to the Epix blog for more details.

If you have to watch one Disney+ movie this May, stream this one
A mermaid sits in a bathtub in Aquamarine.

Disney+ subscribers have almost certainly noticed by now that this month's selection of new movies is abysmal if you don't also have a Hulu subscription. While Disney CEO Bob Iger recently crowed to investors that Disney+ is now profitable, he neglected to mention that the streamer only achieved that status because the programming has been severely cut. Unless you really love documentaries about The Beatles, Queen, The Beach Boys, or Jim Henson, there are literally no other new movies on Disney+ in May beyond the offerings from Hulu.

Because of the Hulu integration, it's now even harder to find a movie on Disney+ (outside of the major Disney brands) that you can actually watch with the original subscription that you paid for. That's something Disney+ subscribers should be very upset about. But even with these misguided content decisions, if you have to watch one Disney+ movie this May, then the film to stream is a 2006 romantic comedy/fantasy called Aquamarine, which is based on the book by Alice Hoffman. It's not actually a Disney film, but fans of The Little Mermaid may recognize certain aspects of the plot. If you're looking for reasons to watch Aquamarine, we've got a few to share.

If you have to watch one Tubi movie this May 2024, stream this one
Two people stand in a mountain valley in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

More than almost any other streaming service, the past lives on at Tubi. Some of that is by necessity, since the bigger streamers sweep up most of the contemporary box office hits, and almost every major studio in Hollywood has its own streaming service. While there are some modern films and TV shows on Tubi, it also has a robust lineup of movies and series that pretend like cinematic and television history began in the '80s. These older titles need a home, and Tubi has given it to them.

However, our pick for the one Tubi movie that you have to watch in May isn't that old, relatively speaking. Director Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon caused a cultural sensation in 2000, not unlike the way Everything Everywhere All at Once did in 2022 on its way to earning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress honors for Michelle Yeoh. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon also features Yeoh in a leading role during an earlier period of her career, and the film was also an Oscar-winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Score. It was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, but came up short there.

Volgarr the Viking 2 will take you back to your Ghosts ‘n Goblins days
A viking slashes a tree in Volgarr the Viking 2.

Developer Digital Eclipse is working on a surprising project: Volgarr the Viking 2. The 2D retro sequel will launch on August 6 for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The news is an out of left field reveal. The first Volgarr the Viking game released in 2013 and was made as an ode to 1080s classics like Ghosts 'n Goblins. Despite being a small release, it sold over 1 million copies over the past decade. As revealed during today's Guerrilla Collective stream, the series is coming back with a new sequel by Digital Eclipse, the team behind this year's Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story.
