James May, Jeremy Clarkson, and Richard Hammond may be busy gearing up for their new live show, but the former Top Gear trio is hard at work securing their next gig.
Following an unceremonious departure from the BBC, The Daily Mirror reports that the crew is in talks with Netflix to produce a new automotive program called House of Cars.
Those familiar with Netflix or television in general will recognize the name as a not-so-subtle nod to the House of Cards series starring Kevin Spacey. To be clear, the reports are unconfirmed by official sources, but Jezza, Hamster, Captain Slow and former Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman are all rumored to be involved.
Previous dispatches indicated that the group was in negotiations with the U.K. network ITV, but an online streaming service such as Netflix has its own advantages.
For example, the provider relies on subscription fees rather than advertising to pull in revenue, which eliminates potential conflicts between the show’s creative minds and their network’s financial relationships.
“What would they do if Jaguar or Volvo had a sponsorship deal but they wanted to berate its latest new car?” asked The Daily Mirror’s inside source. “Jeremy doesn’t like being told what to do. It could cause huge arguments.”
Given the presenter’s rocky past with public relations, eluding major disputes is probably in the program’s best interests.
Stay tuned to DT as the story continues to develop, but in the meantime, check out the Clarkson, Hammond, and May Live YouTube channel for fresh Top Gear-ish content.
