BMW teases the all-new 2017 7 Series ahead of its debut next week

The all-new BMW 7 Series. Driving luxury. Unveiling June 10th.
This year’s Frankfurt Motor Show won’t open its doors for another four months, but automakers are already starting to talk about what will be presented during the event. One of the most anticipated debuts is the all-new 2017 BMW 7 Series, which will be officially unveiled online on June 10th.

To whet our appetites, BMW has published a brief teaser video that highlights the 7’s laser beam headlights, its sculpted surfaces and its LED tail lamps. The flick also reveals that BMW’s next big sedan will boasts air breathers behind the front wheel arches, a feature designed to reduce turbulence in the wheel housings.

The video does a good job of keeping the 7’s overall design under wraps but numerous leaks and a big batch of official spy shots have given us a very good idea of what to expect from it. More of an evolution than a revolution, BMW’s next flagship will ride on a new modular platform made out of lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic and, as a result, it will weigh nearly 300 pounds less than the outgoing model.

The 7 will inaugurate BMW’s remote-controlled parking technology. Likely offered as a costly option, the feature will allow 7 owners to maneuver the sedan in and out of tight parking spots by simply using buttons located on the key fob to control the gas, the steering and the brakes. Inside, the sedan will inaugurate the next generation of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, which will be able to recognize hand gestures.

Mechanically, the next 7 will get the same straight-six mill as the 2016 340i that was introduced a couple of weeks ago. A 460-horsepower V8 will likely be the volume engine, and BMW will also offer the 7 with a 600-hp 6.6-liter V12 engine designed jointly with Rolls-Royce. Finally, German media outlets report that a M7 will join the lineup for the first time ever, but BMW has not confirmed the rumors.

Stay tuned, we’ll bring you full details about the next 7 when it goes official next week.

The all-electric BMW i7 is a home theater on wheels
Front three quarter view of the 2023 BMW i7.

BMW is no stranger to electric vehicles. It launched the quirky i3 hatchback in 2014, and followed it up more recently with the i4 and iX. But now BMW is making its flagship vehicle electric.

The BMW 7 Series is the automaker’s biggest, most opulent sedan, and for the 2023 model year, it gets a redesign that includes a first-ever electric variant. The 2023 BMW i7 xDrive60 (to use its full name) will start shipping to U.S. dealerships in November alongside gasoline 7 Series models (a hybrid version will arrive later as well).

NASA pushes its mega moon rocket test back to next week
NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket with the Orion spacecraft aboard is seen atop a mobile launcher.

After two false starts, NASA is hoping that the third time will be the charm for the wet dress rehearsal of its Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The enormous rocket which is intended to carry humans to the moon and, eventually, perhaps even to Mars, is undergoing the final major test before its launch -- a rehearsal in which the rocket is brought out to the launch pad, filled with fuel, and a countdown is started and recycled as it would be for an actual launch. The rocket won't leave the ground, but the rocket's systems are all powered on and this rehearsal checks that everything is ready for when it does actually launch.

The first test was scheduled for last weekend on Sunday, April 3, and went ahead despite weather including lightning that struck the towers around the rocket. The lightning towers are designed to absorb lightning for just such an occurrence, so no damage was done to the rocket. However, there was a problem with a fan safety system which meant the test had to be called off. NASA tried again the next day on Monday, April 4, but had to scrub for a second time due to a stuck valve.
