Pimp out your Android Wear watch with these 17 new watch faces from famous brands

One decided benefit of Android Wear devices over the competition (ahem, Apple Watch) is support for third-party watch faces. It’s not a feature unique to Google’s wearable platform — Pebble has supported custom watch faces for some time — but Google is now leveraging its extensive brand partnerships to coordinate a high-profile push for new watch faces. Today, the company announced the addition of 17 new Android Wear watch faces from an array of well-known jewelry, fashion, and character designers.

The new faces feature a mix of paid and free, square- and round-shaped designs from a menagerie of luxury groups and artists. Bang and Olfusen has made a watch face, as has Italian clothing staple Geox. You’ll find contributions from Anrealage, Moods of Norway, Cynthia Rowley, Kevin Tong, Muji, LuluFrost, GeorgeFrost, and Efva Attling, plus one (somewhat ironically) from Swedish watchmaker Triwa.

If none of those suit your taste, though, a few of the watch faces celebrate popular television, movie, and video game franchises. Hello Kitty, Moomins, Rubiks Cube, Terminator Genysis, and Gundam watch faces are among the collection. You can check out all the new faces in the gallery at the top of this post, and download your watch face of choice from the Play Store here.

The new faces, which are available starting June 22, build on Android Wear’s considerable existing library of third-party content — at Google’s last count, the Play Store was host to more than 1,500 custom watch faces. It’s a market that’s rapidly grown since Google implemented support for custom faces in an Android Wear update last December, which isn’t surprising given the pent-up demand. Before the introduction of an official Watch Face API for Android Wear, developers created unsanctioned watch faces that notched up hundreds of downloads.

The popularity of custom watch faces makes their omission in Apple’s watchOS 2.0 — the Apple Watch’s next major update — all the stranger. Until the day the folks in Cupertino inevitably add support, you can expect Google to trumpet Android Wear’s advantage loudly and frequently.

At Moblie World Congress (MWC ) 2024, Google is bringing a healthy bunch of new features to Android. In line with the AI push all across the industry, some notable AI-driven enhancements are on the table. There are also a handful of core Android features that sound practically amazing.
The first in line is Gemini. The generative AI chatbot recently got a standalone app for Android, and now it’s headed for the Google Messages app. Users can chat with Gemini directly in the messaging app and use its generative capabilities for a host of things, like drafting replies, refining a message, and more.

Another feature that was showcased a while ago is finally ready for prime time. Android Auto is gaining support for message summarization for standalone texts and group chats, and it can also suggest replies. With a single tap, users will also be able to drop a message, start a call, and share an estimated arrival time. The idea is to deploy AI for crucial tasks so that it can minimize distractions while driving.
Lookout, an accessibility-centric feature for users with vision challenges, is also getting meaningful AI love. On Android phones, Lookout will now read AI-generated captions and descriptions for media content. For now, the AI boost to Lookout and Messages is limited to the English language.

Google Gemini app on Android.

Remember Bard, Google’s answer to ChatGPT? Well, it is now officially called Gemini. Also, all those fancy AI features that previously went by the name Duet AI have been folded under the Gemini branding. In case you haven’t been following up all the AI development flood, the name is derived from the multi-modal large language model of the same name.

To go with the renaming efforts, Google has launched a standalone Gemini app on Android. Moreover, the Gemini experience is also being made available to iPhone users within the Google app on iOS. But wait, there’s more.

The annual CES show in Las Vegas is often filled with new wearables, but ever since I started to attend, one company, in particular, always delivered the goods: Fossil.
