Ford has introduced its 2016 model year F-150 with a few minor updates and a new styling package. The most significant of its changes have already been revealed, including its Pro Trailer Backup Assist and CNG/Propane Fuel Prep Package.
The aptly named Trailer Backup Assist adds a knob to the F-150’s dash that lets the driver control the power steering system to more easily backup the truck with a trailer attached. Pretty simple. As for the Fuel Prep Package, for between $7,000 and $9,500, Ford will retrofit the 5.0-liter V8 equipped 2016 F-150’s to run on either compressed natural gas or propane. For that kind of cash, it’s more of a novelty addition, because it would take a very long time to pay for the system with the money you’ve saved on fuel.
Also new for 2016 is Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system, which is guaranteed to be quicker and more intuitive than the MyFord Touch interface, but will offer similar features like voice commands, smartphone integration, and social media apps.
Engine options remain the same, including a 3.5-liter naturally-aspirated V6 with 282 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, a 2.7-liter Ecoboost V6 with 325 HP and 375 lb-ft of torque, a 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 with 365 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque, and a 5.0-liter V8 with 385 HP and 387 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy ranges from 18 to 22 miles per gallon.
All 2016 F-150 trims can be optioned with new 20-inch aluminum wheels and two new paint colors: Shadow Black and Lithium Gray. XLT and Lariat versions can be equipped with a Special Edition Package that adds tinted headlights, black running boards, unique 20-inch aluminum wheels, a dark anodized grille, bodyside graphics and an upgraded interior with red contrast stitching and two-tone seats with Alcantara inserts.
Pricing information for the 2016 F-150 has not yet been released, but expect a small uptick in its sticker price for the updated SYNC system and other features.
