Before the LG G4 was released, there were reports the company had dropped the big-screen G Pro range, but now rumors are spreading that the aging G Pro 2 will get a sequel after all. Here’s everything we think we know about the G Pro 3 so far.
Huge 6-inch screen, and a Snapdragon 820
According to Mobipicker, the G Pro 3 is going to be an extra large phablet with a screen measuring 6-inches. That’s half an inch bigger than the G4, and potentially larger than the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 5. The report, which came at the very beginning of July, added the screen may have a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 was linked with the G Pro 3 in the same report, and is said to be accompanied by 4GB of RAM. The Snapdragon 820 isn’t expected to be available until much later in 2015. On the photography side, a big 20.7-megapixel camera may be found on the rear — however this would be greater than the one found on the G4, making it sound unlikely — and an 8-megapixel camera may be used above the screen.
Other specifications being rumored include a fingerprint scanner, 32GB of internal memory, a MicroSD card slot, and Android 5.1 as the operating system. These specifications were then echoed by an @leaksfly rumor found on the Chinese social network Weibo.
A fingerprint and a retina security scanner?
The only addition found in the @leaksfly leak to the possible spec was eye-scanning recognition, which unusually may be fitted in conjunction with a fingerprint scanner. This isn’t the first time LG has been linked with developing eye-scanning security technology for a future smartphone. Another rumor report stated it was working with Irience, a known biometrics company, on a retina-scanner for the possible G5 phone. Using both eye and fingerprint scanning to really take security seriously could be quite a selling point for the G Pro 3, if the reports turn out to be accurate.
G Pro 3 and G4 Pro could be two different phones
Rumor reports have suggested the G Pro 3 is a different device to the equally rumored and unofficial G4 Pro, which may also launch this year. The G4 Pro, which is also leaked under the name G4 Note, may be slightly smaller than the G Pro 3, and retain many of the G4’s headline features. You can read more about that device here. Neither phones are official, and there’s still the distinct possibility they have been abandoned by LG, or even that both are the same device.
There’s no indication on when — or, of course, if — the G Pro 3 will launch, but current rumors have it going on sale before the end of the year. A possible $790 price tag has been mentioned.
