What’s new on HBO and Max in June 2024

Matt Smith in House of the Dragon.
HBO

Long before Max came along, Game of Thrones was one of the biggest hits in the history of HBO. The prequel series, House of the Dragon, hasn’t quite reached those same heights. But after a two-year hiatus, it’s good to have the dragons around again even if the second season will only have eight episodes instead of 10.

Most of the highlights this month come from HBO’s original programming, including the new series Fantasmas, a documentary called Ren Faire, and a presentation of Jeremy O. Harris’ Slave Play. As for the newly added movies in June, it’s hard to get very excited about flicks like Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. There are some film highlights, including the 2013 remake of Evil Dead and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But for the most part, this month’s movie lineup is very disappointing.

Our complete list of what’s coming to HBO and Max in June 2024 is below. Titles without “HBO” in the listing will only be available on Max. DT’s film and TV show recommendations are in bold.

We also have lists of the best movies on HBO and HBO Max and the best shows on HBO and HBO Max to help you decide what to watch next. If HBO isn’t your only go-to streaming service, we have helpful articles on the best movies on Netflix and the best shows on Netflix, as well as the best movies streaming on Amazon and the best shows streaming on Amazon, plus plenty of other guides for Hulu, Peacock, and Disney+.

The best movies on Hulu right now (June 2024)
Nell Tiger Free in The First Omen Movie.

It's almost unfair for Hulu content to be featured all over Disney+ because the former is a fully functional streaming service with a great selection of movies ... while the latter is not. As new films have slowed to a crawl on Disney+, Hulu has continued to put out a lineup that few other streamers can match. Even The Batman and Joker are on Hulu this month, but only through June 30. That's the only reason we didn't add them to this update.

Instead, we're putting the spotlight on four films that are going to stick around for a while: The First Omen, Bullet Train, Slums of Beverly Hills, and It Follows. Between those flicks, horror fans, action aficionados, and comedy lovers should be very happy. Hopefully, July will bring some more romance options to Hulu as well. In the meantime, our complete roundup of the best movies on Hulu right now is below.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

3 underrated Amazon Prime Video movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
Two men spy from a car in The Limey.

As we head toward the end of June, it's worth reflecting on how we want to spend the rest of summer. For some, that's going to mean enjoying nice weather or getting some time in at the beach. For others, it might mean escaping from the heat, at least for a while, to check out a great movie.

If you fall into that second category, then we've pulled together a list of three great, underrated, titles available on Amazon Prime Video that are all worth checking out. Prime Video is home to some of the best movies available online, but it can be hard to find the ones you want. These three will at least give you a great place to start.
